Anthem Essay
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, depicts a futuristic society, an alleged utopia where everyone was created the same, no exceptions. Men in this novel are taught that it is a virtue to agree and be agreed with, when no one praises the creator, the egoist. The protagonist, Equality 7-2521, struggled his whole life to separate and free himself from collectivism, and develop an ego, obtaining victory at last. From a young age, Equality 7-2521 has differed from his ¨brothers¨. He was more knowledgeable when he was younger, more curious in his teenage years, and more futuristic in his twenties than his peers. First, Equality 7-2521 was superior in the way of knowledge, not to mention everything else, to his brothers in school. School work was effortless for him, while it was strenuous or just the right pace for everyone else. Citizens of this society are all taught that ¨It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them.¨ Frowned upon for simply being smarter, Equality tried to forget his lessons to seem average. Brainwashed, Equality believed his gift of intelligence to be a curse of selfishness, and additionally tried to give up what makes him special to fit into what society believes is correct. Ayn Rand 's novel, The Fountainhead, states, ¨Man’s first duty is to himself. His moral law is never to place his prime goal within the persons of others. His moral obligation is to do what he wishes, provided his wish does not depend
Anthem begins by introducing what is immoral in the dystopian society written before the reader. This type of world the main character resides in is intricate and far too uniformed for modern life. Equality 7-2521 is the turning point for this civilization -he is the outlier of the painstakingly ordered community that was made. However, before this, he was just another ordered and uniformed pawn in the eyes of the Council. He exists in a world where everyone is raised in collectivism- Equality maneuvers his will to contrast the rules of which he has always lived by and toils against his own mind with feelings that he has against his own society, Ayn Rand creates a character that carries a prominent personality to advance the unchanging world
The word contentious means tending to argue or strife; quarrelsome. This connects to what the chapter is portrayed in many ways. In this chapter, Equality 7-2521/ Prometheus go to the council to discuss the light box and all of their discretions. I think that this chapter title is exactly what is going on in this chapter because they spend most of the chapter arguing with Equality. On the second page, Equality tells the council that they are street sweepers.
In Anthem by Ayn Rand International 4-8818 agrees to keep Equality 7-2521’s secret of the tunnel under the ground because much like Equality 7-2521, International 4-8818 is different than the rest of the people in the place they live in. This is because while Equality 7-2521 explains how he found the hole that led to the tunnel he talks about International 4-8818 and explains that, “they are a tall, strong youth and their eyes are like fireflies, for there is laughter in their eyes. We cannot look upon International 4-8818 and not smile in answer. For this they were not liked in the Home of the Students, as it is not proper to smile without reason. And also they were not liked because they took pieces of coal and they drew pictures upon the
According to Ayn Rand, she is one of the few that thinks being independent in a society is better than being subservient. Anthem is not just a forceful indictment of collectivism. It is, first and foremost, a festivity of individualism — a “hymn to man’s individuality.” This is a quote by Ayn Rand. In this quote, you can understand that by this quote, she feels that being independent is much better than being dependent.
“I am. I think. I will.” (Rand, A. (1938). Anthem.
In Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem, mankind is a philanthropic machine. The brotherhood nobly works together to achieve a common goal. In doing so, each man is asked to disregard his own personal means and goals. For every decision must be a collective thought and every advancement, a joint action. However, one man in this machine malfunctions.
Have you ever looked up to someone for motivation like a family member/loved one and wondered what qualities make them who they are? These are qualities like Dedication is what makes a person who they are. For example, like in “Anthem,” a story written by Ayn Rand, shows a lifelong struggle of a character to learn more about his world and the constraints to prevent him from doing so. Equality no matter what the society has on him, he let his individualistic views into effect like learning even when it was forbidden. Everyone in his society has been bred to only say specific words and Equality longs to know more than what's on the top of the barrel.
The Road to Individualism Every great heroin will face a plethora of conflict in their journey. For Equality, it is not any less. Equality faces internal and external conflict in his path to heroism, faces conflict with others, but also himself. As his desire for a new life grows, more problems arise.
What genre of literature would you say teens are into the most? Turns out teens tend to turn to dystopian societies, now do you know why? Teens these days are just getting darker in all types of ways one of the ways they are getting darker is they are starting to enjoy darker genres of literature and movies. One of the ways to show you why they can relate to these stories is by talking about the movie The Giver based off the book by Lois Lowry directed by Phillip Noyce and the book Anthem written by Ayn Rand. True Purpose Ayn Rand’s novel, Anthem, is a glorified story about an individual trapped in a damned society. Prometheus is regulated by tacky and cruel laws and rules, but he is trying to find who he is and what his real reason in life is; not just what his city tells him to be. I believe these rules and laws exist because Ayn Rand wants to show the evils of collectivism. The Council controlling the city wants to create a world where everyone is treated exactly the same, in every way.
"We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever’”(Rand 19). In Ayn Rand’s dystopian novel, Anthem, the citizens are trained from birth to think only in the plural, to the point where they cannot even conceive of individuals, but only see each other as part of the whole group. Rand’s protagonist, Equality 72521, begins the novel as a street-sweeper who is devoted to the group, but begins to move towards individuality as he progresses towards pure selfishness, as Rand believes we all should. Rand uses the words “we” and “I” to represent Equality’s journey from being dependent on the group, to being utterly independent of everyone.
Everyone is born with independence, but imagine a society where this virtue is ceased. In the novel “Anthem” written by Ayn Rand, she describes a society in which everyone is the exact same. Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 are two characters that live under a strict and controlling rule, in which they make decisions for you. As they story goes on, the two characters discover love, freedom, liberty, and independence. To Equality, being similar to his brothers was not equal, he believes that the meaning of “I” celebrates joy and peace within a society.
