Currently there are around three million doomsday preppers in the world, just waiting for the day they have to rely on their resources. These people are sure that the day will come where they have to survive on their own. Doomsday preppers, have to try to find a way to fulfill every nutritional need as best as they can. It is important for them to fulfill every need so that they can try to live out whatever needed, if they do not then they will surely die. In order to do this they need to find a way to get something that has all these things mixed together, and it would save them time and a surplus of food to gather nutrients. Food will be very scarce and hard to find so they have to plan ahead and prepare to scavenge for healthy food. These preppers and other people that are interested in food planning may be intrigued to know that they don’t actually need food, they just need the nutrients gained from food. Rob Rhinehart and his friends may have come up with the perfect solution with their creation of Soylent. Soylent has twenty percent of all nutritional needs in just one drink. Soylent cost $2.69 a drink and it has four hundred calories per bottle. Each Soylent bottles shelf-life is two months and Soylent expires after a year. In the United States today, a large part of the average person’s life is food. Each individual consumes nearly one ton of food each year, but never knows what they are truly putting into their body. Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle, was one of the earliest works that provided people an insight to the production of their food. The novel was originally written to show the mistreatment of the workers, typically immigrants, but instead resulted in the passing of the Pure Food Act of 1906. The movie, Food Inc. provides today’s people the same insight that The Jungle gave the people in 1906.
In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads.
Although healthier options may be expensive or growing fruits and vegetables may seem like a burden, Berry suggests that it can make eating more enjoyable, an “extensive pleasure” according to Berry. As Americans, freedom and democracy plays a big role in our politics, yet we are ignorant to the fact that giving control of what we are eating and it's sources is not an example of freedom. (Berry) Americans are fooled by the lies advertisements give out about their foods, continuing to make Americans ignorant of the realities of food, and the only way to stop this is by realizing and “ reclaiming one's own part in the food economy” possibly by making food instead of buying fast food, deciding on better choices instead of settling with the unhealthy ones.
The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan, is a book about American dietary traditions, and the food quandary American’s encounter in today’s society. Pollan presents various philosophical points to entice his readers to question their current eating habits. Further, Pollan attempts to help readers determine the resolution to the long-standing question: “What will I fix for dinner?” by exploring the diverse food routes available to modern-day man and by dissecting those paths to reveal the best for well-being, solidity, and sustainability. Pollan initiates the book by examining the dilemma of the omnivore, a beast with infinite options for eating.

Jonathan Bloom, in his book American Wasteland, raises some hightailing issues and resolutions that are geared towards the American culture of food waste. The food waste in America today is ever so present in households across the nation that a “quarter of the food squandered would provide three meals a day for 43 million people” (Bloom 47). Taking those numbers into consideration, Americans need to make some radical decisions in changing the way they consume food and ways in discarding the leftovers. Bloom brings up reoccurring phrases in his book in order to get his messages across to readers. Three key phrases that stand out in Blooms’ writing to discuss and argue his message are food insecurity, redistribution, and guerrilla giving.
The entire book focuses on the fact that we, as individuals, need to be more informed on the process of producing our food as well as the actual ingredients in our food. Not everyone is going to change but approaching this one person at a time can change the world.

Johnathan Foer who is a vegetarian, claims that his diet and way of living is his the way of improving health in the American public.
