Poetry in literature is often marked significantly by a literary device or a special characteristic of the structure. In Robert Pack’s poem “An Echo Sonnet, To an Empty Page,” echoes throughout the poem create a tone of awe-solemn wonder, revealing the poet’s confused attitude towards the relationship between form and meaning and the inner conflict formed within oneself, dealing with the “voice” and the “echo.” A conversation then begins. In Derek Walcott’s poem “XIV,” the uses of personification, imagery and metaphor convey a mesmerized feeling in both the audience and the speaker. Through using a poem to narrate his childhood experience of listening to an old woman telling tales, Walcott successfully passes on this wonderful and great experience to the readers. The poem is not just about an experience with the old story teller, but a memory that holds the speaker and the speaker’s brother together in Caribbean. By using personification in the poem, the speaker presents himself as a child by imagining the inanimate objects with human like characteristics. As the speaker travels around to find the story teller, he sees the sun as it was “threatening us as we climb closer.” In a child’s mind, everything is fascinating and they tend to see through the physical and literal appearances of ordinary objects. "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll is a pretense poem with an abundant amount of fantasy imagery and heroism. Carroll, who is known for these dramatic poems, is well known for this poem. Much the same as most sagas with a focal character, "Jabberwocky" is basically titled after the most critical thing in the ballad – the goliath beast. The title of this ballad drives the reader to figure out that the beast is the focal power of the sonnet. It moves our regard for the beast, and far from our mysterious legend.
Furthermore, the superficial simplicity of Hughes’ poems is not meant to deceive, but to encourage readers to engage in poetry from different perspectives because there is more to the poem than meets the eye. Additional questions remain, however. Does Hughes’ experimentation with form threaten to mischaracterize or further objectify the subjects of his poetry? Does Hughes ascribe too much value to these ordinary objects and places? Are there limitations to Hughes’ experimentation?
The imagery had much light and childishness to it. With images such as “it seemed to Myop as she skipped lightly from her house to pigpen to smokehouse that the days had never been as beautiful as these”. As well as having lines such as “she felt light and good in the warm sun”, and “She struck out at random at chickens she liked” to create the feeling of child hood innocence, using all of this light to mean goodness and being unaffected by the harshness of reality. However she also uses the imagery later to show the loss of innocence when she describes everything as darker, when she starts using lines such as “it seemed gloomy in the little clove she found herself in” and “all his cloths had rotted away”. Alice walker is using this imagery to convey that the innocence has been lost at this point, taken by the harshness of reality and death.
Poetry is an effective means used to convey a variety of emotions, from grief, to love, to empathy. This form of text relies heavily on imagery and comparison to inflict the reader with the associated feelings. As such, is displayed within Stephen Dunn 's, aptly named poem, Empathy. Quite ironically, Dunn implores strong diction to string along his cohesive plot of a man seeing the world in an emphatic light. The text starts off by establishing the military background of the main protagonist, as he awaits a call from his lover in a hotel room.

On of the greatest examples of imagery that Alice Walker uses is the one that compares light and darkness. At the beguining of the story the author mentions delicate and calm setting of a farm. In creating this imagery the reader is able to understand that all the positive and upbeat words are associated with the farm setting. Myop’s light-hearted innocence is also shown when “watching the tiny white bubbles disrupt the thin black scale”. The effective description provides credibility to the environment, and makes the later events all the more shocking,

Firstly, the sun would be a major symbol of the story which would symbolize happiness of the characters. Once the sun was out all the kids were happy and having the time of their lives. Running outside in the sun was all they wanted. In the passage it states, “The children lay out, laughing, on the jungle mattress, and heard it sigh and squeak under them resilient and alive.” (4).
