Amy Winehouse: Haunted by Fame Amy Winehouse has died at the age of 27. The soul-singer who won the hearts of millions and became a Grammy award winning star has had her life tragically cut short. By Adam Roney Fans around the world are mourning at the harrowing loss at one of the most iconic singers of the 21st century. Her extraordinary voice and unique presence engaged many people. Listeners of her music felt Amy’s own pain and heartbreak through her tragic lyrics. Her critically acclaimed multi-million platinum selling 2006 album ‘Back to Black’ won her numerous awards from Grammy’s, Ivor Novello’s and Brit Awards. Amy was born in 1983, as the daughter of a Jewish taxi driver, Mitch and her mother Janis, now a retired pharmacist in the suburban area of Southgate in North London. Despite having a difficult upbringing with her parents separating at age nine she always found a way to get through the struggles by having a loving interest in Jazz. At age 13, she won a scholarship to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, in her application explaining why she wanted to attend the school she wrote, "I want people to hear my voice and forget their troubles." Her rock’n’roll lifestyle soon shone through and she was expelled shortly after for refusing to focus on her work and having her nose pierced.
