American Imperialism In The Late 1800's

In the late 1800's, Americans were motivated to increase relationships with other countries. However, United States run into world affairs, and had to spread foreign policies in order to explain its interactions with parts of the world. There are three foreign policies that were created by presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson. These policies conveys the roles of the United States in other nations.

During the late 1800’s there was a scramble for imperialism. The United States felt that it needed to be more powerful, and to show its relevancy in the big picture of the entire world. Basically, the U.S. wanted to be taken seriously, and a possible way of doing that was imperialism (which also happens to be a very controversial course of action). As Henry Cabot Lodge was a member of the Senate at the time, this speech was directed toward the people of the United States that could be persuaded into voting for the movement of imperialism. Lodge is trying to convince a group of people to believe and vote for a certain thing, so he is definitely going to bring light to the more positive components of this movement.

The discovery of the new world was traced back thousands of years ago. The new world already had settlers within the land before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1607. The reactions of the Native Americans were hostile because of their past interactions with the Spanish explorers by the coastline. The encounter with Columbus' arrival, allowed the natives to attack one of the ships before the ships had landed on the shore. The attack on the ships did not last long because the Indians offered food and hospitality.

Manifest Destiny led the early Americans to the Pacific, but the European Age of Imperialism influenced the United States to start to search beyond its continental borders to grow economically. As demonstrated by westward expansion, economic interests dictated political decision-making. Not only in government, but in the military as well. Rear Admiral Alfred Mahan saw the US Navy as the protector of American sea-trade routes. Without a strong navy, American trade could not reach its full potential.

Colonization was rebirth if you will in the later 19th century through the wake of industrialization which gave Europeans a new desire to conquer and established the need to go and claim natural resources to be used in the factories. Many of the larger nations joined in this rebirth with the most notable actions being the Scramble For Africa which showcased the most rapid expansion of European influence ever seen before. " The effects were profound. In 1875, 11 percent of the continent was in European hands.

United States Imperialism in the late 19th century was very selfish time. Many people in that time, debated about whether are not benefiting our country was the right way or the wrong way. The motiving factors that impacted our imperialism are economic, military, and cultural. These factors impacted the American Imperialism from 1890-194 by having control over weaker territories meeting our expanding needs.

One of the unique challenges of studying history is that there is never a single right way to interpret the events of the past. Oftentimes, it is difficult to compile a disparate range of people and places into a single theme. Likewise, in the early days of colonial america, there was no single narrative that could describe the vast differences in the society, behavior, and beliefs of early American settlers. However, as America continued to grow and expand, a common narrative developed around the dreams of settling a new land, and the ways in which this was accomplished. All of this shaped a collective identity that came to revolve around a tool that unexpectedly shaped the course of history: the axe.

Before the 20th century the United States was an isolationist nation but around the late 19th century America decided to convert into an imperialist power. They had numerous reasons to shift into being an imperialist nation. America didn’t want to begin imperializing to settle and live in the nations they were taking over, they already had America for that reason, they wanted to adopt these nations for what they had to offer, which was many things. America saw an opportunity to improving their nation and took it. Even if there were many causes for America to imperialize, three of them stood out the most.

At the start of the 19th century, America was already expanding its territory. In 1803, the United States of America had bought the Louisiana Territory, it was bought from France which had made the country two times larger. In 1819 Spain had given up their territory of Florida to the United States. President Monroe issued the “Monroe Doctrine” in 1823, its main purpose was to warn the European countries to not enter the Western Hemisphere. In order for America to achieve its goal of becoming an imperialist nation they had conquered other countries economically, culturally, and with a strong military in the late 1800’s.

This mass amount of power not only caused the war to become more heated with countries like Britain using their colonies to fight on their side, but it also spread jealousy to less powerful nations. According to document E, a German propaganda poster, illustrates Britain as an octopus that is reaching over the world to its conquered colonies. The title reads “Freedom of the Seas,” (Document E) with a caption reading “England, the bloodsucker of the world,” (Document E). In document F, Germany had less colonial rule than Britain and therefore are angry that Britain has so much power. This brings on more bitterness that caused the war.

WWI was not necessarily a distraction from either imperialism or progressivism, but it did affect them substantially. The war began in Europe in 1914 when Germany and Austria-Hungary went to war with Britain, France, and Russia. Bulgaria sided with Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire and were known as the Central Powers because they formed a large block in the center of Europe. Britain, France, Russia, and the United States were known as the Allied powers which over time included twenty-seven nations.

A great change United States history was the development of the country as a whole, regarding its magnitude in land mass and overall spread of acquired territory. Also known as the Age of American Imperialism, this significant expansion came about from foreign relations with other nations. Through peaceful negotiations, as well as violent conflicts, the U.S.’s sphere of influence and control expanded across various bodies of water. Colonial Imperialism, this form of imperialism is virtual complete takeover of an area, with domination in all areas: economic, political, and socio-cultural. Economic Imperialism, this form of imperialism allowed the area to operate as its own nation, except for the trading and other businesses.
