Hey there! Today’s literary discussion is on theme. Third on our list, theme is defined by Dictionary.com as a unifying or dominant idea, motif, etc., as in a work of art, (Dictionary.com). In short, a theme is “the author’s purpose, meaning, or message,” (Lesha Myers, 104). Theme provides your story with greater meaning and purpose. It allows readers to dig deeper into your writing. While some themes are incredibly evident (i.e. Androcles and the Lion depicts the benefits of helping others), others can be subjective. Take The Hunger Games for example; some say the theme is defiance of immoral authority while others might say the theme is surviving against all odds. Both would be right because Suzanne Collins' theme is open to interpretation. …show more content…
For instance, a sentence such as “Love bled from him,” could be considered an allusion to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ for our sins. Likewise, words and phrases such as resurrection and silver coins also allude to historical, biblical events. Allusions such as these hint to other works and add greater depth to your story. Imagery underlines your theme with visual representation. The mockingly pin in The Hunger Games serves as imagery suggesting Katniss, like the mockingly, is a creature the Capitol never wanted to exist. The rose in Beauty and the Beast is something that blooms in adversity. Be sure to utilize these and other literary devices to bring your theme to the reader’s attention. If you want a powerful, memorable theme, choose something that will really resonate with your readers. A ‘coming-of-age’ theme will not be nearly as applicable to an older target audience as it will to a teenage readership. A theme about loving children could be more meaningful to an adult audience. Finally, think carefully about the purpose of your story before picking a theme. A story about a commoner fighting a dragon will host a theme of courage or fighting temptation better than it would love or gratitude. Conclusively, ask yourself what the meaning is behind your story, and modify that into your
Many themes can emerge throughout the story. A theme is the underlying message or main idea in the story. A theme in copper sun is, even though there are challenges and struggles to be faced, you should always stay resilient and brave. In the beginning, Amari is separated
The theme of a piece of literary work is kind of like a main idea and it could be hidden within the story. In Rikki Tikki Tavi, which was written by Rudyard Kipling, I know that there can be a debate on what the theme could be. The evidence in the text can help aid the reader to understand what the theme is in the piece of literature. That is why I know without a doubt that the theme is “good triumphs over evil.”
The theme that best fits this book would be live a meaningful life, not a superficial one for the authors changing tone and the characters development throughout the book support it perfectly. The authors changing tone in the book perfectly supports the theme of live a meaningful life, not a superficial one. One example would be in the very beginning of the book. Without a theme, a story is just a story with little meaning. To test whether a theme is worthy, the reader should ask whether it teaches a lesson, whether it's revealed through characters and whether it applies to the entire work. Several themes in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel and in the movie The Book Thief pass this test. In Night, Elie writes a memoir about how he and his family are sent to Aushwits, a concentration camp, for being Jewish during the holocaust.
One example of one important action that develops to reveal the theme is in the beginning of the story. For example, in one scene Carly decides she needs the Taker to be able to get a better grade on the SAT. One important quote from this scene is when the author writes, “for better or worse, I made up my mind” (62). This is important in helping to reveal the theme because Carly thinks she can not ace this test. Her parents and friends thinks she can because all school year she she has high grades and is a smart child.
So in this book I think the theme would be although adventure can be exciting play it safe this is important in many life situations and this book. I think everyone should use this theme in all there exiting or dangerous life situations!
Theme is an idea that is repeated or developed throughout a piece of work. Justin A. Reynolds uses The Opposite of Always to portray the idea of the importance or lack of time. Jack has the archetype of the rebel. Jack and Kate share the star-crossed lovers archetype. In the novel Jack also goes through the hero’s journey as a situational archetype (Volger’s Hero’s Journey).
For example, a red dress or idea of guilt throughout the narrative. “Their Eyes Were Watching God” has many motifs that will have people thinking about nature that reflects on life and people. “Their Eyes Were Watching God” had a motif that explains the whole book about Janie’s first love. The motif was “He could be the bee to a blossom-a pear tree blossom in the spring.” (Hurston 106).
The second example of theme in this story is Romance. I chose this theme for romance because this whole story is about the narrator trying to get a seventeen year old girl for his whole summer, “There was a summer in my life when the only creature that seemed lovelier to me than a largemouth bass was Sheila Mant”. This quote shows how much he likes this Sheila and how much he wants to take her on a date before the summer ends. I chose romance as a theme because the narrator in the story has strong feelings for Sheila and he sacrificed the biggest fish of his life just to make Sheila like
Also , the setting of the story impacts the theme. One of the themes is the transition from childhood to adulthood .
The theme is the overall meaning of the story. We can see this when Connell writes, “Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes--the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters”. Then later on in the short story the main character has to adapt
Theme is the message about life or human nature that is “the focus” in the story that the writer tells ( Glossary of Literary Terms 3). A theme in this story would be “Love and Blindness”. This falls under the theme category because it is saying love itself changes the way you are as a person but it also has its blindness. The “blindness” is not so much of not being able to see them physically but how they truly are as a person. A person can be very depressing, arrogant, or even abusive but the person in love will see past it hence the term blind.
In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” the theme is don’t mess with fate and this story elements like character, setting, and plot all help contribute to the theme. The character’s emotions, reaction, and actions are a significant role in revealing the theme. The setting, though not realized as much actually shapes the story too. As normal, plot most definitely contributes to the theme. The character’s reaction contributes to the theme.
