The Killer Angels, a book written by Michael Shaara that explains the crucial Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War, along with the perspectives and lives of both the leaders of North and South. The bloodiest battle of the Civil War is explained through the eyes of the leaders of Union and Confederates in a way that is breathtaking and exhilarating. Even though South was determined and bold; The North was able to wear the confederates down because of their leaders who had a strategic plan and clear concept of war to take in prisoners and win for the sake of freedom. The essential concept of war for the Unions meant to free the prisoner slaves and restore the balance and freedom to the country they had fought from the British.

Imagine being captured and trapped in a camp, in North Vietnam, for six years filled with days of brutal torture and agonizing boredom. In Leo Thorsness’s novel, Surviving Hell, Thorsness and his fellow soldiers found a way to not only survive, but to thrive. Through numerous events and experiences, the soldiers survived by utilizing any means possible, both mentally and physically. It was their hope and optimism that kept them going. This can be seen when Thorsness plots his walk home.

In 2003, the nonfiction author Jon Krakauer published his book Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith. Motivated to expand the typically Islam-focused understanding of religious extremism that dominated the U.S. after 9/11, Under the Banner of Heaven addresses fundamentalism and the violence that often accompanies it in a totally different context – the Mormon faith. Krakauer tells in parallel the history of Joseph Smith and the founding of his church, and of the modern-day extremist offshoots that embrace Mormon beliefs but do not belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). In 1996, 29,029 feet above sea level, a expedition to climb Earth's largest mountain went horribly wrong. In the autobiography, Into Thin Air, eight climbers lost their lives trying to descend from the top of the world making this the second worse fatality rate ever to occur on Mount Everest. To be able to successively climb Mount Everest, clients must be intellectually competent, which is one of the pillars of the Grad at Grad. Being Intellectually Competent means that students go above and beyond the expectation both academically and in every day experiences, while taking the knowledge students learn in class and present it into the community. Jon Krakauer, the author, shows in his expedition multiple cases of him growing to be Intellectually

Perseverance is a theme evident throughout Elie Wiesel's Night, as the author's survival in the concentration camps is a testament to his unwavering determination. In chapter 7 of Night, Elie and his father are transferred to a new concentration camp, where they are forced to endure grueling labor and terrible living conditions. Despite their situation's physical and emotional tolls, Elie remains determined to survive and keep his father alive. " I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me?

Humans' natural instinct to survive takes over when they are in perilous circumstances. The need to save yourself would be the first thing that would come to mind, regardless of how self-centered the choice might be. In the memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel talks about his experience while in the concentration camps and how every often they were faced with life and death situations. When the Jewish people first arrive at the camp, they seem to care about each other and help each other. However, as the Holocaust progresses and the conditions the prisoners are forced into worsen, they are left with no choice but to focus solely on their own survival.

In Nothing But the Truth there is one thing that stood out to me throughout the entire book. The whole book is full of lies. Philip Malloy tells lies about everything and to everyone. He lies to his parents, the principal, and even to a reporter that is interviewing him. Throughout the book we continue to see the lies play out until the very end of the book when Philip finally decides to tell the truth.

The author shows how terrifying it was to be in the camps but also how faith can help you get through those tough times. Religion and faith can shape a person's form in different ways either a good or bad way. The book shows how these camps can use a person's humanity, and How it can affect their religion. Eliezer and his family got captured and taken to camps, while some died and others were injured. Eliezer had to use his faith in god to know they would come out alive even if he had second thoughts.

As Janie ages, she has been going through different stages of loves and misloves, which gradually introduced her to reveal her feminnity. In the book Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston depictures Janie’s feminism through her growth of life from an innocent and vulnerable 17 years old girl who had not yet experienced love to a true women who forgets “all those things (she doesn’t) want to remember, and remember(s) everything (she doesn’t) want to forget” (1) in various of perspectives: Janie’s education and her grandmother’s instigation about marriage; Janie’s misloves with Logan and Jody; and Janie’s love for Tea Cake. Before Janie even learned the concept of “love”, Hurston showed how Janie was raped when she still had her “womanly”

"Look, it's important to bear witness. Important to tell your story.... You cannot imagine what it meant spending a night death among death." These are the words spoken by Elie Wiesel when he speaks about his experience during the Holocaust and how it ended. Throughout his time in the different concentration camps, Elie had to endure the toughest of circumstances.

Antisocial Edna While being social and part of a community is incorporated in humanity, it is also enjoyable to spend some alone time away from distractions and reflect. This characteristic can be seen in The Awakening with the main protagonist Edna who gravitates toward privacy. Edna longs to be an independent, strong woman and associates this belief with being alone and on her own. Edna is often involved in activities with others where she chooses to seclude herself from the group. Kate Chopin accentuates this aspect of Edna through her actions, but especially through her relations with Robert.

“...these days had never been as beautiful as these… each day a golden surprise” (2-4). In the short story “The Flowers”, surprise is the element that Alice Walker uses to portray the meaning. IT is at the heart of the meaning which is driven forward by imagery, setting, and diction. Walker takes her past experiences and uses them in her writings to make her story stronger.

Perhaps most widely known as a deeply talented Harlem Renaissance writer, Zora Neale Hurston also trained under Franz Boas as an anthropologist. Studying at Barnard in the 1920s, she was the only black student at the school, and in 1928, she became the first to graduate. When she pursued a graduate degree at Columbia, Boas encouraged her interest in African-American folklore. It was this research that informed her fiction, particularly her use of dialect and “folk speech” in works like “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” Hurston grew up in the town of Eatonville, Florida, an all-black community established in the wake of the Civil War, and she returned home to chronicle the folklore, sermons and music she’d grown up hearing.

Everyone has depression, but did you know on October 29, 1929 the whole US went into depression. People lost their jobs, people lost their homes and lot’s of other things. Every bits and piece was super valuable at that time. Some effects the Great Depression had on people at that time was people lost their money. In an article called Digging In by Robert Hastings a girl explains how importants every minute of light is.

Although it defines and affects everyone, the topic of “race” is a difficult one. To some, race is the most important aspect of their life, while to others race is what they check off on forms. James McBride’s memoir The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to his White Mother demonstrates racial topics and issues that discuss origins, sense of self, sense of identity, and neutrality.
