A gap between his destiny and reality define the comparison of what his life could've been. Paul could see his past in chapter 6, “a large portion inapprehensible melancholy….the memories are past, they belong to another place that is gone from us...And even if these scenes of our youth were given back to us we would hardly know what to do...I believe we are lost.” His reviewing of his old family album and childhood papers makes him realize there's no way to come back as the old Paul, there's no way to come back as the old him.Such events in the front has shaped his perspective in human beings, he has lost that compassion he used to held.Paul parents also realize that his life will never be the same. Also another piece that supports this evidence is Paul openness towards his feelings when seeing dying patients at the hospital:”...and all men of my age, here and over there, throughout the whole world see these things, all my generation is experiencing these things with me.”There for showing that all the cruelty Paul has suffered of the war is tag along the same experience towards his

World War One was an extremely gruesome and vile event to ever happen to the world, where millions of young men risked their lives to fight for their country. Many great poems, books, and literature had been composed to expose the vileness of the war, and hopefully to prevent future wars. Throughout the intense novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Remarque and some of the poems explored during class, exemplifies the themes about the horrors of war and the lost generation prevalently within these somber, yet incredible works to showcase the ghastly effects of war. Horrors of war is a crucial theme that is repeated through most of the literature analyzed throughout this tragic unit, and the effects of the horrific war takes an extreme
In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, Paul Bäumer participates in the bloodiest war of all time, and he develops the skills of intelligence, leadership, and loyalty. In
As author Alex Morritt once said “The word 'friend' has become so utterly void of meaning in a world governed by social media. How can anyone truly claim to have eleven hundred friends ? In my book that would involve making time to meet at least three of them every day of the year.” This fascinating perspective on friendship is one that is exhibited by both Thomas Hardy’s poem “The Man he Killed” as well as Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front. Although not related to social media, both of these books dehumanize the terms “friends” to simple objects, portraying ideas on how allies are deemed allies and enemies are deemed opponents in war, even though this may not be the case if one was to meet them in real life.
All Quiet On The Western Front “The future German man will not just be a man of books, but a man of character. ”-Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. The future man will not know what character is without books. The future German will be a weak imbecile without the writings of many authors to help guide him into manhood. This quote shows the German ignorance when it comes to things that would undermine “King Hitler”.
Throughout the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, the narrator of the story, Paul Baumer goes through the realization how joining the war was destroying his and others’ youth while turning people against each other. Remarque uses the phrase “abyss of sorrow” as figurative language to describe the suffering and heartbreak the young boys experience in the front line, earning the generation of boys that served in World War 1 the name “the Lost Generation”. After Paul observes the pain of the prisoners that he is assigned to watch, he sees for himself “how people are set against one another, and in silence…slay one another”. Just because two sides are waging war, people are brainwashed or persuaded to sacrifice themselves for a fight that is
War is a harsh reality that is inflicted upon the unwilling through the “need” of it’s predecessors and those whom wish it. All Quiet on The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque is about 19 year old Paul and his friends in the “Second Company”. Even though they are just out of school age, they have already seen things that many could not bear to even think about. Eventually, all of his friends die, and even Paul too, dies. Remarque uses diction and syntax as literary devices to express his anti-war theme, or lesson.
Throughout the ages, wars have wreaked havoc and caused great destruction that lead to the loss of millions of lives. However, wars also have an immensely destructive effect on the individual soldier. In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque, one is able to see exactly to what extent soldiers suffered during World War 1 as well as the effect that war had on them. In this essay I will explain the effect that war has on young soldiers by referring to the loss of innocence of young soldiers, the disillusionment of the soldiers and the debasement of soldiers to animalistic men. Many soldiers entered World War 1 as innocent young boys, but as they experienced the full effect of the war they consequently lost their innocence.
Throughout their lives, people must deal with the horrific and violent side of humanity. The side of humanity is shown through the act of war. War is by far the most horrible thing that the human race has to go through. The participants in the war suffer irreversible damage by the atrocities they witness and the things they go through. In the novel “All Quiet on the Western Front" is the description by Erich Maria Remarque of the graphic violence and gore and the psychological pain that the average soldier endured on the western front.
Imagine being a teenager with little to no fighting experience fighting for your life on the battlefield. All Quiet on The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, Paul is just a 19-year-old boy who had enlisted in war because he was peer pressured by his teacher at his school. He had no idea how to fight and had to pick everything up on the fly. In A Midnight Clear, 6 soldiers went out to war with each and all had IQs over 150. The leader and main character is Will Knott he was promoted to sergeant with very little war experience and his name wasn’t
Near the end of Paul’s leave of absence, he felt isolated and full of regret, “I ought never to have come here. Out there I was indifferent and often hopeless-I will never be able to be so again. I was a soldier, and now I am nothing but an agony for myself, for my mother, for everything that is so comfortless and without end. ”(Remarque 185) This quote accentuates the narrator’s separation from his family, when he cries out “I ought never to have come here.”
Since many people look down upon Paul, he notices facts and clues society does not, however, he fears saying something, in which causes his friend to end up dying Within the story, Paul lives in his own bubble, disconnected from the world and society, so he knows what others do not. It is as if Paul lives in the sun and knowledge of the world, baring that burden while others in society live in darkness with a slight sliver of light from the moon, believing they know the world to its full extent when in reality they are blind and in the dark. This affects Paul since he possesses ideas from another point of view that others have no clue about. This is important because without the knowledge that Paul posses, he would be like his none the wiser parents, which
Despite creativity and authentic stories that war books possess, they are not accessible everywhere. All Quiet on the Western Front, written by Erich Maria Remarque, is a book about the hardships of war. The author went against The author challenges authority and extreme nationalism. The Nazis, in the 1930’s, publicly burned this book as it was deemed anti-government and anti-military. Contrary to other literary history works, “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Remarque Erich Maria is so unique because of the way it displays such a realistic view of war and the associated loss of humanity, innocence, and emotion that attend with it. Throughout this novel, Remarque proves his point that war is unnecessary, and dishonorable. Remarque’s focus is how one is changed and ruined after just a few nights in war, the effects of war, on everyone. The novel really emphasizes on the accumulating body count everyday, showing every aspect of how war is absolutely gruesome and such a waste of pure lives. Also, “All Quiet on the Western Front” shows how the position of being in war can change a person dramatically preventing them from returning
In All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque exposes the reality of war by refuting the idea of the “Iron Youth,” revealing the mistreatment of soldiers, and showing the critical effects war imprints on them. When any war begins, young men are always the first ones to be sent into the war zones. To clarify, older generations believe young adults are the best options for fighting; these boys are strong, full of energy, and do not have anything to lose. “The chief source of this pro-war ideology were the older men of the nation: professors, publicists, politicians, and even pastors” (Literature and Its Times).
