Alcatraz is located in San Francisco bay 1.25 miles from shore from San Francisco, California, United States. The U.S army first built Alcatraz also known as The Rock as a military prison in 1909. In 1933 America was in crises, it had great depression that unleashed a massive crime wave, criminals would rule the city and gangster would rob banks, that lead to an FBI chief requesting a petition for a super max prison. In 1934 the department of justice took over Alcatraz Island. The purpose of Alcatraz was to isolate some of America’s worst criminals; it was the toughest prison for almost 30 years and had top security level at that time. He was very ingenious that he used simple tools to cut through the bars. John Paul Scott convicted of armed robbery. 3 years after Scott arrived on the rock he is working in the Alcatraz kitchen basement, security there is looser than the rest of the prison. For a few minutes every day Scott heads to the basement with a variety of tools including a simple piece of string covered with flour wax which he used to cut through the bar of one of the windows, it toke him more than a year to cut through bars. On December 16 1962 Scott and an accomplice escape through the window and head of to the water with yet another simple tool rubber gloves. The plan to escape out of Alcatraz was made by four men Frank, the Anglin brothers, and Allen Clayton West, west claimed that he was the master mind behind the plan; he also was the key to the escape. Allen had a prison job, he worked as maintenance which gave him the advantage of moving through the cell blocks and he was able to see an open vent in the ceiling and though he might be able to get out of that vent. All of them had cells near each other which allowed them to communicate with one another at any time, behind these cells was a rarely used utility corridor filled with pipes once they where there it was easy for them to climb three stories onto the roof shaft and from the roof of the cell house down to the water and off the rock, but first they had to find a way out of there ells and into the corridor, they had to make the vents in the back of their cells bigger so they can fit through them. To break through they started with whatever they could find, they also had to conceal the noise of them breaking the concrete, and they worked while other inmates played music. The yuma territorial prison was established in 1875, it was the first building to have electricity in yuma and the residents were able to use that for themselves. The prison taught the prisoners how to read if they didnt know how to already and were taught different languages from other prisoners and other people. The prison had brought many people to yuma, it increased the population by 11.3 % in its time span. There were many rules to the prison and it held many types of prisoners. The yuma territorial prison did a lot for yuma Arizona and is a national treasure.
Escape Under the Prison Fence There were two trials for the crimes of the train robbers, the first three-day trial ending in a hung jury since, according to John Mackie's article, “the foreman wouldn't convict Miner and his friends.” The second trial was short, only one day, and the men were found guilty. Miner received a 25-year sentence in the New Westminster Pentitentiary. The sentence didn't scare the older bandit.
This violent escape attempt led to the death of two correctional officers and three inmates. They had also claimed it as a federal penitentiary. It was later on labeled “The Battle Of Alcatraz”, even though there were multiple battles in Alcatraz. They more than likely just labeled it that because it was the most vicious and violent battle.
Teddy and Ralph sawed bars off, kicked glass, smashed locks, dropped 20 feet, and then dropped 30 into water. No one ever found the two again. This was only one attempt, about 30 years later, John, Clarence, and Frank escaped too. The dug holes through the walls in their cell, this was because the walls were worn down and could easily be chipped. From the guards counted heads, they made fake ones to replace them, they also made a fake air grate.
Alcatraz was used for prisoners, very dangerous prisoners. Prisoners who murdered people,prisoners who sold liquors and also drugs,prisoners who also kidnapped humans. Those prisoners went to Alcatraz. How is Alcatraz different from other prisons, you might ask. One way Alcatraz is different from other prisons is because Alcatraz was a super max prison.

Private Prisons and Mass Incarceration–The Problem of the United States In America, the private prison industry was made for necessary profit based off of the management of prisons by large, private companies. In David Shapiro’s insightful report “Banking on Bondage”, he discusses the logistics of the United States prison system, saying “In America, our criminal justice system should keep us safe, operate fairly, and be cost-effective”. Today, the United States imprisons more people than any other nation in the world, including Russia, China, and Iran.
Most of the most famous criminals lived there in alcatraz cells ( video 2). Frank Lee Morris, John, and Clarence Anglin attempt to escape. The question most people have is, did they survive? There are evidence to how they did, and how they did not. Most of the evidence leads to them succeeding to escape but failing to survive.
Pierpont and Van Meter had longer sentences than John Dillinger, but they weren’t planning on serving their full terms, and had already planning to rob a bank for when they were out of prison. Seizing the moment, Dillinger joined a few of Pierpont's men and began a string of robberies. The jail was about 100 miles away from Pierpont's hideout, and he soon realized that with some cash and a few guns, he would be able to spring Dillinger. Pierpont knocked on the door and announced that they were officials from the state penitentiary and needed to see Dillinger. Mrs. Sarber then gave the men the jail keys and they sprang Dillinger.
Over a century ago in 1875 the construction began in what is now known as the Yuma Territorial Prison. Known to be one of many of Yuma’s historical artifacts the Territorial Prison was in operation for thirty three years, holding up to 3,069 prisoners and obtaining its first prisoner on July 1, 1876. Although the Yuma Territorial Prison was viewed as having a bad reputation, it actually treated the inmates fairly well. The prison maintained rules which were enforced and followed by the inmates.
