African-American Stereotypes

The racial stereotypes of the early American history had a substantial role in shaping attitudes toward African-Americans during that time. In the past, black men had characteristics that accompany thieves, rapist, murders, etc. and because of that, when looking into the black race, all black men are seen as threats despite being the same as any other race. When analyzing racial stereotypes, one will begin to see that they are “constructed beliefs that all members of the same race share given characteristics” and these associated characteristics are generally negative (Jewell, 1993). Brent Staples is an African American man who has been mistaken as a criminal numerous times just because of his race.

When most races hear the words African American, negative thoughts rush to their brains. But why? Africans Americans have been perceived as negative characters to other races for decades. Individuals often forget large amount of blacks have been successful in life and still are accomplishing many things. Today, we live in a world where the bad outweighs the good. Because of this, many individuals of different races lack the knowledge that many blacks are actually achievers instead of failures.

The media plays a significant role in shaping societal perceptions and attitudes towards different groups of people. This includes the portrayal of black males in the media, which has been shown to have a negative impact on the outcomes and success of black males in society. One of the main ways in which the media negatively influences the outcomes and success of black males is through the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes. Black males are often portrayed in the media as violent, criminal, and dangerous, which reinforces the stereotype that they are a threat to society.

For countless years, there has been deliberate bigotry against people of color all around the world. However, today in America the social prejudice against the African American race has become almost entirely a thing of the past. Researchers argue that the discrimination people of color face has lessened over time and the barriers between whites and blacks have weakened. Education in America has changed significantly to benefit all races since the 1920’s. Education is an essential part in any person’s life no matter their race and every person should be able to receive the same opportunities.

Factors can exist in in the perceiver, the target, or the situation. For example, when you look at your target, your interpretation of what you see is influenced by your personal characteristics (Book pg.153). Things that are important to you matter in these situations and the context in which perceptions are interpreted have an impact. I also believe that stereotypes play a factor in this as well. Being African American, I know many of times I have experienced situations where on the job that sly remarks have been made or actions have been displayed towards me.

The label of white trash even existing is seen to be appalling because of the former notion of white citizens being the alphas and that angered other White Americans(Eastman & Schrock pg 207). Stereotypes were and are a problem but Southern Rock & Roll musicians embraced theirs and appropriated with it because of capitalism. While no one deserves to be put into a category based on prejudice, White Americans made their stereotypes a positive while minorities struggled and still continue to struggle everyday due to stigmas placed on them. Different classes of White Americans were discriminatory against one another. If you were to portray this white trash image, you’d go against the grain so to speak and denounce their privilege.

Stereotypes About African Americans That Were Depicted in the Media in the Early 1900s In the 1800s and early 1900s, there were a myriad of stereotypes that depicted African-Americans in a rather negative light. From the Mammy to the Jezebel, the Uncle Tom to the Sapphire, these pejorative stereotypes, which still persist in today’s society—only in a different form—reflected and reinforced systemic racism. In the short story “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples, he talks about how because of his race he is feared and discriminated upon. While in New York, Staples walks during the night and is mistaken for a mugger or a rapist because of his race and his large figure. People are very hesitant in the world today because there has been such a great amount of crime. Staples sharing his stories of people’s reactions shows how many assumptions can be made about a person simply based on the color of their skin.

At one moment or the other we have either stereotyped a group of persons (oversimplified ideas about groups of people) or be prejudice in our thinking (thoughts and feelings about those groups), worst still discriminatory toward them (through actions). As mentioned, Stereotypes can be based on race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation almost any characteristic, such as when members of a dominant racial group suggest that a subordinate racial group is stupid or lazy. Stereotypes are simple images or beliefs over the attributes assigned to a particular social group, are models of behavior that become schemes deeply rooted in our mentalities to the point that we adopt them as part of human naturalness. Stereotypes can be racial, religious, sexual and social. These could be the caused of a known incident or attitude years earlier, or simply the result of frequent rumors. Stereotypes can affect different spheres of society. These assumptions can filter into many aspects of life.

Stereotypes can help people out in many different ways such as helping people be seen as not just a category. It can make people be seen as not a man or woman but a man or woman who has done things. These stereotypes can be seen also as a way to encourage a higher standard of people. The people can learn from these stereotypes and turn them to the opposite of what the stereotypes says. At the same time stereotypes can be used to help people respond to different situations.

Negative stereotypes can have harmful consequences especially to teens or students. By stereotyping, we infer that a person has a whole range of characteristic and abilities that we assume all members of the group have. According to Blum(2004), Stereotypes are false or misleading generalizations about groups held in a manner that renders them largely, though not entirely, immune to counterevidence. In addition to, Aronson(1999) claimed that stereotypes affects people’s social lives,emotions, and how people interact with their environment. There are times people are not so open to the idea of meeting new people, and making new friends.

Unfortunately, stereotypes are assigned to almost every group of people and have become a more common way for people to separate themselves from other people and groups, yet this behavior is inherently human. Stereotypes are used to create biases by labeling people based on their looks, handicaps, skin color, ethnicity and a plethora of other factors. Sometimes people
