African American Church Participation Case Study

William P. Quinn was the fourth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and was one of the most energetic and longest-serving bishop out of all the other individuals. He was born on April 10th, 1788 in Calcutta, India. He was 20 years old when he immigrated to the U.S and settled in Bulks Country, Pennsylvania. After being reciprocated by the black Methodist preachers in 1808, he became more progressive in the church. In 1812, Quinn got his license to preach and attended at the conception of the AME Church in Philadelphia in 1816.

The book A Shopkeeper’s Millennium: Society and Revivals in Rochester, New York, 1815-1837 touches upon many of the social, political, religious and economical changes that occurred in Rochester, New York from1815 to 1837.The author Paul E. Johnson, organizes the data collected into sections to help the reader better understand certain aspects of the different stages of the revival. He starts the book off with a man named Charles Finney traveling down the Erie Canal to the town of Rochester, NY. The Erie Canal places Rochester, NY in the center of the trade markets, which in turn pushes the town’s craftsmen to develop a new style of business. Allen Dwight Callahan’s The Talking Book: African Americans and the Bible connects biblical stories and images to the politics, music and, religion, the book shows how important the Bible is to black culture. African Americans first came to know the Bible because of slavery and at that time the religious groups would read it to them instead of teaching them by letting them encounter it for themselves. Later the Bibles stories became the source of spirituals and songs, and after the Civil War motivation for learning to read. Allen Callahan traces the Bible culture that developed during and following enslavement. He identifies the most important biblical images for African Americans, Exile, Exodus, Ethiopia, and Emmanuel and discusses their recurrence and the relationship they have with African Americans and African American culture.

There are many open wounds in the African-American community that have not healed what so ever. Disintegration of family structures in the African-American community has been a persistent problem for far too long. High out of wedlock birth rates, absent fathers, and the lack of a family support network for many young African-Americans have led to serious problems in America's urban areas. The persistence of serious social problems in inner-city areas has led to a tragic perpetuation of racial prejudice as well. African Americans still face a litany of problems in the 21st century today.

Black Student Unions are currently present throughout the nation due to efforts of past struggles. San Francisco State College (now University) was the first official campus to coin the name BSU as well as the first University to open up its own College of Ethnic Studies department. This came out of the Black Studies Department formed due to the Student Strike of 1968 to 1969. The College to this day continues to celebrate its forty years of functioning and stands proud on the fact that is is the only academic department of its kind throughout the country. Within a later conference held in California, other campuses took up the name and Black Student Unions became widely accepted.

These experiences included students eating, sleeping, studying, socializing, and worshipping together. Only privileged white male students were allowed to attend college during the seventeen century. Families sent their son’s to school to prepare them as Christian leaders, and clergy had high

Report On Religious Literacy In the book Religious Literacy, Stephen Prothero’s main argument is that religious literacy is very important and it is important for youth to be religiously knowledgeable. Prothero starts off his book by talking about how “Americans are both deeply religious and profoundly ignorant about religion” (1). Prothero says this because Americans go to church like and are religious yet know nothing about the basics of a religion. Then Prothero goes on to show some examples in which people being religiously knowledgeable would have helped a situation.

This week’s assignment is to answer questions, in essay format, on “The Religious Dimension and Black Baptists.” In order to explore the topic and try to answer the assigned questions, reading chapters one and two of the textbook, “The Black Church in the African American Experience,” by C. Eric Lincoln and Lawrence H. Mamiya, provided answers. Below are responses to the five questions. 1. What is the "Black Sacred Cosmos" (Chapter 1)?

During the civil rights era, the black church stood as a foundation for the African American community. It was a safe haven for those who felt like they didn’t have a voice outside of the church. The black church used to be a political atmosphere especially for those advocating black rights. It gave blacks the pedestal to vocalize the issues in the community and in the world to the oppressed. This was during a time when African Americans received no respect and were placed at the feet of injustice by the American society.

African American Studies was a great experience. Has opened my eyes to my surrounding and the world around me. This course with Dr. Sheba Lo, was something out of me confront zone. I learned so many things from race to cultural to the importance aspect of African American. We are isolated to an environment that hide so much history that we all don’t think they are important to who we have become.

Topic Sentence: Religious beliefs and practices lead to social and personal transformation. Example: Religious faith can have an enormous power the consequences of which either human flourishing or provoking fear and intolerance. There are notions of healthy and unhealthy religious ideas and cults. Society should receive knowledge about core beliefs of the world religions and, as a result, it may affect the social and personal transformation.

The church need strong leaders today because of the shortage of priest,the economy, and the church attendance. Shortage of priests is a main conflict in our society today because young Christian teens don't focus on becoming a priest when they become older. Therefore when the older priest gets sick there would not be any one to take over. This is why strong priests today need to teach younger kids about becoming ordained.
