The novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel discusses how Pi struggles with adversity, not accepting his life until learning the hard way while also trying to come to terms with himself during his ocean journey; along with being reasonable about the unusual tasks ahead. Pi has to go through misfortunes causing him a great deal of stress during this long awaited journey.
When Pi regrets the choices he made, that went against a particular desire from his religious beliefs Pi honored the religions like they were all equal- “ the way they see god, are hat-wearing Muslims.” He expressed Yann Martel's aim that following the path to shaping a person’s beliefs and values, is the single most important action to shaping a human being in the future along with treating everyone equally- not differently. Later on in life, Pi concluded that he can honor, respect as well as practice different religions at the same time without letting them interfere with his personal family life. The ensuing parts of this heroic story are beyond believable, forming a basis of the Life of Pi and how that will drive every person to curiosity.

Pi had realized that this way of life now, would be all he has for the coming months ahead. Pi spoke briefly - “ Take life the way it [advances toward] you.” He directed Yann Martel's focus to take a minute - to think about the importance as well as meaning to one’s self during what seems to be a rocky patch in a journey; Pi can share his triumphs, sharing how important it is to learn the meaning about crossing one’s mind, as well as respect for, self with family. Sense after reading "life of Pi" Pi is a teenager born in India and at the same time believing in Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. His father runs a zoo, so he knows the habits of animals. Frankly speaking, the beginning of this story is not attractive, mixed with a religious belief in a teenager's growth experience. Then the story officially entered into the "fantasy draft". Pi family take boat to move to Canada with their animals, Pi's father wanted to bring the animals to a foreign country in order to sell a good price.
Pi continues his journey by learning how to live in a small space with these animals and even training one of them. In the end Pi reveals another story with people replacing the animals that were on the lifeboat before. Pi had initially used animals which best represented the people who were really in the boat. Life of Pi is a movie about Pi, a shipwreck survivor, and his epic journey of discovery and faith. It is based on Yann Martel’s novel with the same name, and the movie, directed by Ang Lee, makes use of magical realism to convey many themes related to life and spirituality. Many significant symbols are also used to showcase the characteristics of magical realism. In particular, water and the carnivorous island were two important symbols that represented the theme of spirituality in Life of Pi.
He loves life, he kills life; he prays to the gods for justice, he betrays them under his evil desire. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, the same things make us laugh, but also make us cry. It’s a dark page from the young man’s book of life and religion. Pi, the main character of this book, believes in three different religions, although they give him hope and energy, it brings the conflict for him because he has to kill and that’s against the faith after the trip; also, Pi’s actions may destroy and ultimately betray his faith and all three religions that he believes in. Religion plays an important part in Pi’s whole life, it gives pi hope and energy.
The portrayal of his character as being highly moral and religious in the beginning of the story were destroyed in his search of satisfying his basic physiological needs by turning into savagery. The theme in Life of Pi is without a doubt the hardships in order to survive. The whole novel is about enduring pain, hardships, starvation, dehydration and more. I believe the author wrote this novel to reveal the hardships one has to proceed through in order to keep living. Pi certainly shows how quick life can change from ordinary to a long lasting nightmare. Surely this can happen to anyone, but not everyone can survive the long lasting nightmare.

By using words such as “terrible burden”, “sacred”, and “never forget” Martel is able to put the reader in Pi’s shoes. The reader can feel the heartache that Pi feels after his first murder. Shortly after, the reader reads, “I did whatever necessary to hold a fish down until I could reach for the hatchet and chop its head off…I laid hands on so many fish that my body began to glitter from all the fish scales that became stuck to it…those were the good days”(Martel 216).
Pi was able to escape onto a lifeboat, but had to learn how to adapt to his new and scary circumstances. With the combination of magical realistic events and Pi’s religious beliefs, Pi along with the reader a contemplates life’s concepts. From the very beginning, Pi makes his love and yearning for religion clear. As Life of Pi progresses, the protagonist picks up multiple religions as he travels through the novel. With the addition of first Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, Pi gains attention from leaders and priests of these faiths. Conflict commences with the religious leaders of these individual faiths.
He is unable to understand why the Lord isn’t listening to his prayers and why everything is detrimental to him. Keeping his religious beliefs at sea is very challenging for Pi, this leads him to experience feelings of disbelief towards God. Despite his doubts, Pi continues to pray and practice his religions. He eventually comes to the conclusion that once everything is taken away from him and he is in complete darkness, he will always have his faith. He admits that loving God is difficult, but it’s something he must do if he is to survive his journey across the ocean.
Pi was lost at sea lonely and there was only a fierce tiger accompanied with him, what’s worse, he did not have enough food supply, fresh water, clothes and safe shelter. Anyone who confront with the same situation would feel despair and even want to give up life. However, Pi survived at last because he believed in religion which always reminded him that he could overcome the difficulty and got rid of the affliction. Therefore, religion was the key to his survival, and made him fill with love.
