They work as experts in their field, providing clinical leadership and consultation to other healthcare professionals, patients, and families. Roles and purpose of organizations American Nurses Association (ANA) ANA also known as the American Nurses Association is consider to be one of the loudest voices for Registered Nurses today. ANA has been around since before 1911. ANA represents all Registered Nurses today and makes sure that there is an adequate amount of nurses that are highly skilled and well educated. They not only make sure that the healthcare system is getting the most up to date and accurate skilled nurses, they are a true advocate for nurses in the work place as well as the general public. Advanced practice nurses (APN) have a vital role in the future of health care, especially since the enactment of the Affordable Health Care Act. With more citizens having health insurance coverage they will be seeking health care providers, and there are not enough physicians to care for them all. According to Letiziam (2014), advance practice nurses are licensed autonomous health care providers that have been trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients and their conditions. Advanced practice nursing is an umbrella that covers four separate roles of nurses, this includes: the certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), certified nurse practitioner (CNP), and certified nurse specialist (CNS).

The Indiana State Board of Nursing (2011) defines advanced practice nursing as a registered nurse who has attained advanced knowledge and skills through an organized program of study. The three categories of study include nurse practitioner, certified nurse mid-wife, or clinical nurse specialist. National certification is not required for nurse practitioners completing an accredited graduate program. However, if the continuing education is part of a certificate program then a national certification is required. Although certification is not required in Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children nurse practitioners are required to certify within one year of employment.

Nurse Practitioners (NP) are registered nurses who have undergone additional education and training to diagnose and treat patients with acute illnesses and chronic conditions. In the event they are unable to assist a patient or feel they need additional care, they make referrals to other medical professionals. NP Jobs many be found in physician offices, nursing homes, long term care centers, clinics and hospitals. A Family Nurse Practitioner fills a gap in the health care system, one seen in the shortage of doctors offering internal medicine and primary care, although those trained as a NP may work in other specialties. .
Personal Statement Pacific Lutheran University’s Entry Level MSN program is one where I can pursue my academic and professional goals in becoming an agent of change for equity and access to healthcare. The emphasis on leadership, program evaluation and outcomes, and informatics during the post-licensure program ensures a strong foundation in which I would be able to apply practice and through the lens of healthcare and equity. As a current higher education professional with an initial intent to go into healthcare, I’ve identified my goals through several similarities and disparities between the two disciplines: to become a lifelong learner, caring for people and populations in high need, and being part of the conversation regarding universal design. Becoming a Clinical Nurse Leader necessitates implementation of evidence-based practices at the patient, family, and community level. To stay current on the evidence, it is imperative for a nurse to demonstrate an alacrity for knowledge and learning outside of the requirements for license renewal.
First, it is important to define what it means to be an “Advanced Practice Nurse” in the state of Indiana before we can look at the stipulations set. The world today as we know it is developing constantly and changing frequently. Healthcare is evolving, and practices are expanding. Nurses like myself are continually seeking education and desire to practice at the most advanced level. Doctorally prepared nurses have become more well known, and have increased the scope of practice for advanced practice nurses in an extremely positive way. Doctorally prepared nurses are known as Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) and are often notable for being high quality and cost-effective health care providers.

Equipped with broad training in both nursing and medicine, NPs offer a wide array of services from diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing medications, to preventative care (Harris, 2014). Numerous studies have supported the IOM's recommendations. A 2013 National Bureau of Economic Research study showed decreased preventable hospitalizations in states with a high NP presence. A 2014 Rand Corporation research also indicated NPs could manage patients with chronic conditions as effectively as physicians (Harris, 2014).
