Adnan Sneyd Character Analysis

They used a kid’s testimony named Jay to put Adnan away, but his claims keep changing over time. The state should not declare Adnan guilty because Jay’s testimony is too inconsistent. Jay is very inconsistent in his testimonies. According to Serial Timeline Map, Jay’s first interview he said that he saw Hae’s body in the trunk of her own car at the Edmondson strip

Jay then had stated in his second testimony that he dropped off Adnan back at school at 12:30 after shopping with him at the mall where Adnan supposedly said that he would kill Hae. After dropping him off they met up at Best Buy where Jay saw Hae dead in the trunk. Jay also stated in another testimony that they met at Edmondson Avenue and then in another testimony, it was at a strip

Jay’s story shifts from statement to statement, and from trial to trial. It’s not the calm recollection of an involved party, but the remorseless web of lies from a guilty man. For example, at first Jay says he didn’t help Adnan bury Hae, then he says that he did. In his first statement Jay tells police that Adnan only

“ Okay, so no one actually testified at trial that they saw Hae and Adnan leave school together.” So nobody saw them leave together, that’s some evidence that Adnan didn’t kill Hae. Also some people said “They’re still friendly; several people said they couldn’t tell or didn’t know that Hae and Adnan broke up.” so basically they were still pretty close after their breakup so honestly there is no motive that Adnan would have used to kill Hae. Some argue this because if there wasn’t an actual murder committed by Adnan, then Jay wouldn’t know these important details. However, this knowledge provided by Jay could just be proving that Jay is the murderer. For example, Jay claimed he refused to help dig the hole for Hae’s body, but then he claimed he did help dig the hole (Koenig, “Inconsistencies”). That is such a big detail that you would think is hard to forget or mess up. Well, he could have just been saving himself but he was already tied into the murder when he talked with the detectives.

Almost a month later, on February 9, 1999, her body was found lifeless in Leakin Park. Moreover, the results of the autopsy stated that the victim died of manual strangulation. In the most unfortunate cases, the crime was blamed on her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, who got convicted of first degree murder serving a life sentence in jail.

When something eventful happens the human memory keeps the details and the events stored in your memory. So when your involved in something as serious as murder happens you will be able to recount your steps and remember what happened that day. So if your stories keep changing you're casting a shadow of doubt upon yourself. Jay a somewhat friend of Adnan was called down to the police station for questions connected to Hae Lee disappearance. Throughout the interviews, Jay's story kept changing and a couple of inconsistencies popped up.

These two reasons are all that a person should need to believe that Adnan didn't have enough motive, or time, to kill Hae. Jays testimony sets the timeline and proves there is enough evidence, which is not presented by Adnan’s lawyer, to say Adnan is innocent by a straying story. The time period where Hae could've been killed does not match Adnan’s timeline. Jay, who is a convicted felon, was the only witness and is trusted to give a good story. Cristina Gutierrez, who was Adnan’s lawyer, had medical issues that distracted her from using useful information in his case.

However, the beginning ends with detectives interviewing Jay, an acquaintance of Adnan, who claims that Adnan repeatedly spoke about murdering Hae, and called him when he had supposedly

It’s a highly debatable topic whether or not Adnan Syed is innocent or guilty in the murder of Hae Min Lee, and I believe that Adnan should be let go from jail. There is very compelling evidence, that points to Adnan not being the one to murder his ex girlfriend. From Jay switching up stories, Asia Mclain's handwritten letters that she wrote to Adnan, stating that she indeed saw him at the local library on January 13th 1999, to Adnan not showing signs of even being mentally unstable. There is many more that I could go in great detail about, but these three focal points stand out to me as key evidence in Adnan's innocence. One reason why Adnan is innocent, is because Jay doesn’t know which story to use.

The person giving the police all the facts about what Adnan did was Jay Adnan’s friend that helped him kill Hae, but did anyone take the possibility that Jay may have killed Hae by himself and just said that Adnan did it and he was the helper. Putting these circumstances aside, it was said by many that the relationship was pretty typical and Adnan got over the breakup easily. This was said by teachers and friends of both Hae and Adnan. One of Hae’s friends, Becky, explained the relationship as “just a silly, teenage, high school, relationship” (Koenig “The Breakup”) which proves that Adnan was not as upset as the prosecution made him out to be at trial. Another notable aspect is that after Hae and Adnan broke up, Hae got in a small car accident and asked Adnan to come help her, her new boyfriend Don also showed up and confirms that him and Adnan had a cordial meeting and explains that they talked for 10 to 15 minutes even after the car situation had been figured out (Koenig “What We Know”). If Adnan was really that broken up about the breakup, he would not have been so friendly towards the new guy who seemed to take his place in Hae’s life.

With millions of criminal convictions a year, more than two million people may end up behind bars(Gross). According to Samuel Gross reporter for The Washington Post, writes that also “even one percent amounts to tens of thousands of tragic [wrongful conviction] errors”(Gross). Citizens who are wrongfully convicted are incarcerated for a crime he or she did not commit. Many police officers, prosecutors, and judges are responsible for the verdict that puts innocents into prison. To be able to get exonerated many wait over a decade just to get there case looked at, not many are able to have the opportunity of getting out.
