In the book “Across Five Aprils” by Irene Hunt, the author makes a few statements to portray her feelings toward the war, she uses the characters and their actions to show her emotions and thoughts about it. The views on war change throughout the book, in the beginning Tom and Jethro think war is going to be so cool, but as time went on their thoughts change. I believe one of her views from the book shows that she is passionate towards war, she uses Tom to demonstrate this.
Tom is a soldier, and he is very passionate about what he does for the Union. Because he believes so much in the Union army, he dies while fighting for them. I think this proves the importance of the war seen by the author. If she didn’t feel this way about the war, why would she make a character feel so passionate for the Union. On the other hand I think the author wanted to show the readers that war was a difficult time for families. In the Creighton family they had two of the three of the family members joining the Union Army, while one of them left to fight for the Confederate Army. One night Jethro found Bill gathering his things on the hillside, he was preparing to join the confederate army. After he leaves the family doesn’t hear from Bill again except for John who found him as a captured soldier. John wrote to the family saying

One example of this is when Eb returns home as a deserter. He is hiding in the woods and only made contact with Jethro. “It was a skeleton of a union soldier, though the uniform it wore was so ragged and filthy it was difficult to identify.” (Hunt, 149) This was taking place when Jeth met with Eb for the first time since he had became a deserter. Jethro could hardly recognize him, he wore ragged clothes, looked like a skeleton, and was filthy. This was used to show the bad side of the war, because the author has already included Tom’s views on war, Eb was the ticket to portray the bad side of
Perry for example was already uncertain of his future and his knee injury already had him on edge. towards the end of the book after burning the corpses of his past comrades he lost all faith, and innocence. So the theme of the book is that war is devastating to person both mentally and

A Separate peace is novel, which is drawn into internal and external war conflicts throughout the novel. The author John Knowles focuses mainly on the internal conflict, which is war with oneself. He portrays this through the character of Gene. The external conflict is also war, which is played as the setting in the novel. Gene goes through a form of internal conflict, he fights within himself about jealousy and fear.
A rational and common response to seeing one’s family after an extended period of time, especially in a circumstance such as war, would be joy. Despite being home from the war, it can be argued that the war still continued for Graves in his mind.
A Separate Peace In the story A Separate Peace John Knowles shows how war impacts everyone despite mere indirect involvement. The people that are fighting in the war are not the only ones that are affected. It also has an impact on their family, friends, neighbors, and those in their communities. As the boys went through school, the pressure of the impending war was starting to have an effect on them.
War, What is it Good For? “In June of 1777, we found out that Father was dead” ( Collier and Collier 164). How would people feel if half their family died in a war? They would go through all sorts of emotions and changes, just like Tim throughout the book.
The first prompt I chose to write about was number two. Trace the evolution of the protagonist. What obstacles does she/he face and how is her/his character being revealed through these obstacles? Does the character seem to have a difficult of easy time learning and/or adapting? What do you think influence this about the character?
This heart attack caused Jethro to take on more of his father's responsibilities which forced him to gain more maturity. “If someone had asked Jethro to name a time when he left his childhood behind him, he might have named that last week of march in 1862”(92). This was truly an unforgettable moment in Jethro’s life. This impacted Jethro in many ways, one in which he had to take on the responsibilities that his dad had once had. Jethro now knows how it felt to work on the field in different climates.

He believes that he caused the insanity of his neighbour, Mary Dempster by letting that snowball hit her. Therefore, the guilt he experiences will ultimately influences his development into an adult. Present throughout the book is the theme of disillusionment. In the school, they’ve been told by their schoolmasters and parents that unless they join the war, they would remain cowards. They see propaganda after propaganda, all alluding towards the glory of battle and warfare. Out on the front, they realize that nothing was further from the truth. Their dreams of being heroes shattered, like when they compare themselves to the soldier on a poster in chapter 7.
