Kumulipo is a Hawaiian chant that describes the story of creation along with a genealogy of Hawaiian royalty. This story was brought to Hawaii by the marriage of two people, Pi 'ikea and ‘Umi. During the time of the formation of this myth Hawaiia was under the authority of a corrupt monarchy, and the dominant religion on the island was Roman Catholicism. It was first printed in 1889, at the time it was in possession of the ruling king, Kalakaua. The story of creation is told by a series of 16 chants, many containing multiple parts.
The Hawaiian Kingdom emerged from the arrival of Polynesians from other Pacific islands and later the unification of the islands by Kamehameha the Great. The Kingdom of Hawaii had a monarchy government system, where the rulers were of the same family and royal blood. King Kalakaua was the last king of Hawaii and Queen Lili’uokalani was the last ruler of Hawaii. While Queen Lili’uokalani was locked away from her throne, she sat under house-arrest in the hopes the next heir to the throne, Princess Ka’iulani would make a change for the better of Hawaii’s sovereignty. Into the present, the Hawaiian Monarchy has been overthrown, annexed and in control by the United States of America.

Hawaii after contact with Europe gradually evolved into a family of national integration, and now most of the population is Japanese in Hawaii, followed by the Philippines, indigenous people, Chinese people, the Korean people, and etc. Captain Cook 's arrival creates an opportunity for national integration and cultural exchanges, but also on the native Hawaiian culture had a negative impact.

This is because of the massive culture, and thriving economy. Even though the imperialism of Hawaii could be viewed as aggressive behavior, it was necessary to stop other countries from acquiring Hawaii. But Hawaii also supplied the United States with a lot of natural resources and a suitable naval base that was crucial for us to win World War II. So without the imperialization of Hawaii, the Axis’ powers could have won WW2 and doomed us all. But since we imperialized the increasing demand for sugar resulted in the importation of thousands of immigrant laborers from all over the world to work the industry.
Although they are doing okay now, since they are the native people of the islands of Hawaii, they should have some form of sovereignty because the treaties made before the overthrow recognize Hawaii as an independent nation, and when the United States broke their various treaties made with Hawaii, the Constitution was broken. However, some say that Hawaiians should not have any sovereignty because today, Hawaii is one of the fifty states, and the
The United State’s annexation of Hawaii in 1898 led to the gradual destruction of the Hawaiian culture and the almost-extinction of native-born Hawaiians. The majority of the Hawaiian natives opposed the annexation of Hawaii and wanted to maintain their sovereignty. Although the Japanese could have taken over the Hawaiian islands if the United States had not, the annexation of Hawaii by the U.S. was unjustified because of the treatment of the monarchy and natives, the infringement of the natives’ self-established culture and government, and the natives’ overwhelming opposition to the U.S’s involvement in Hawaii. From 1795 to 1874, the Kamehameha Dynasty ruled over the kingdom of the Hawaiian islands. Up until the death of Kamehameha III, the U.S. had stayed out of interfering with the islands.
After watching the film called ‘Act of War’, I again felt that countries’ do not stand for justice but only pursue their national interests. The reason why Hawaii was so desirable to the United States was the imperialistic characteristic that America had at that time. Even a small island or land is into the consideration of taking over. In detail, the Americans wanted to use the land as their military base and a strategic spot for expanding their imperialism to Asia. The fact that American continent was far away from Asian and European continent, made them realize that in order to empower their global power they need to first dominate the closest countries, even a small land that they consider it trivial.

As most people imagine about Hawaii, it was a place of alluring paradise, from sensations, views, activities, to whom I was surrounded by. The paradise felt temporary , like the first year I have moved from Korea to Hawaii, not because of surroundings changed nor hardships against people necessarily , but because it was me who began taking it for granted, and for this reason, this was, and still is the perfect place where I am able to quickly realize, reflect, and respond to the beauty of life that God has granted me even in the midst of difficulties. Every time a guest visit our family, they tell me repetitively, “You are so blessed”, and that’s right, I feel special. But I hear many students from mainland say Hawaii students are dumb, or
