A Separate Peace Narrative Essay

In John Knowles A Separate Peace he writes about the transition from childhood to adolescence. In this coming of age novel taking place in the 1950’s two teenage boys Finny and Gene form a relationship based on fear and adventure. The two opposite teens, finny a outgoing basically perfect teen and gene being a lesser perfect balances out the relationship between the two. The fact that they are somewhat minor opposites aren’t the only thing that brings the two together. Finny’s fear of anything bad or evil and gene’s fear of hitting rock bottom forms a relationship between the two teens which sets the stage for us all.

In the book, “Separate Peace” community is exemplified first through both Gene and Finny resided in a boarding school for young men/boys. The young men had future aspirations of moving forward in life by enlisting in the WWII. As we all know by enlisting into the military the men all share the same goal which is fighting and protecting our country. Secondly, community was presented through the boys being friends and never separated. Both individuals were a part of the super suicide society.

A Separate Peace Gene and Finny are Psychological aspects of the same person. Because some things gene says make it seem like they are the same person. Gene and Finny are the same person just have different sides of that one person. Gene is the sarcastic, anxious, and jealous side of him, and Finny is the fun, loving, peaceful, energetic, brave side. Then Leper could be the crazy psycho path side of Gene after he goes to war.

A Separate Peace begins when Gene Forrester returns to Devon boarding school, the school in which he attended during world war two. It had been fifteen years since he had been there. Walking through the campus Gene remembers his time spent there. The one he remembered a lot was the summer session in '42 when he was 16.

Describing John Knowles, Contemporary Novelists wrote that he "is a fine craftsman, a fine stylist, alert to the infinite resources and nuances of language." Knowles is best known for his first published novel, A Separate Peace. Writing Knowles ' obituary for Entertainment Weekly, Karen Valby said "John Knowles was a god to generations of 10th-grade English classes" - students required to read the coming-of-age classic. One critic writing for the Saint James Guide to Young Adult Writers commented on the novel 's popularity among educators - "it is a very useful text with which to teach students how a good book should be written. " Critics praised A Separate Peace from the time of its publication.

In the fictional novel A Separate Peace by John Knowels, the reoccurring message sent to the reader is the relationship of conflict and resolution. He uses the characters in his novel to take his message even further by giving example of how rivalry has its consequences, don’t incriminate someone when it will only cause destruction between both parties and to be honest with the truth so it doesn’t come back and hurt you. In A Separate Peace Knowles continuously shows rivalry as always having a consequence good or bad. In the novel Phineas, Gene’s best friend, is seen to the reader as a star athlete in, what seems to be, every sport he tries.

The Envious Friend Jealously drives people to unthinkable and incomprehensible actions that is understood least of all by those responsible for it. John Knowles wrote a novel called A Separate Peace that takes place in New Hampshire. Gene, the narrator of A Separate Peace, is a conformist, genius, but envious southern boy that plays an important part in this novel. A Separate Peace depicts how Gene’s envy and imitation of Finny affect him, his relationship with Finny, and his achievement of peace.

Strength develops in someone through their experiences which have the ability to make them an emotionally stronger person. A quote by Ernest Hemingway presents that “the world breaks everyone, then some become strong at the broken places.” Even those who suffer the most will have the ability to bounce back at a stronger state. This theme reveals its relevance in A Separate Peace by John Knowles as we analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the main characters, Finny and Gene. Although some may insist that Finny’s emotional state fits the mold of a weak character, I have confidence that Finny has the most inner strength out of the two boys given his description and actions throughout the novel.

Part of friendship consists of accepting a friend's shortcomings. This theme, generally associated with A Separate Peace, means that friends should embrace each other's imperfections. Some people seem perfect with no flaws at all while others seem hopelessly imperfect with many flaws, but the truth is everyone makes mistakes. Friends should accept each other's shortcomings because unrealistic expectations can damage a relationship. In A Separate Peace, both Finny and Gene had difficulty accepting a friend's shortcomings.

A loving friend turns murderer after his retched jealousness and overanalyzing pushes him to new lows. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the true character of Gene Forrester is shown as he narrates his point of view of the story. Gene Forrester is a relatable ever changing, humanistic, and someone who is always in contention. Although at points Gene seems mentally unstable, he is a round, dynamic character that adapts and is generally mentally sound. Gene being the narrator of his own story shows from his perspective just how he views people and their interactions.

Point: Leper is like a blender because he is all mixed up. Evidence: After Gene’s trip to see Leper he is fully convinced he has become crazy after the frequent crying and the absurd talk between the two characters. Sadly Gene finally admits it and confirms when Brinker says “I’ll bet he cracked up, didn’t he? That’s what happened.” referring to Leper.

“Nothing endures, not a tree, not love, not even death by violence” (Knowles 14). John Knowles famous quote in his work A Separate Peace does more than leave a lasting memory. Set in the New England preparatory school Devon, the novel focuses primarily on the relationship between Gene and Phineas. Knowles uses foreshadowing, especially in the first chapters to answer questions about the relationship Gene and Finny have.

Private Peaceful is a historical fiction novel written by Michael Morpurgo. The story is set in the homefront, school, and battlefront during World War I. This story revolves around the powerless Peaceful brothers, Charlie and Tommo, who face injustice between people who have power and people who do not. Throughout the novel, Morpurgo tells a message to the readers that the rich and powerful victimise the poor and the weak.

A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a fictional book about Gene Forrester, a student at Devon Private Boarding School. This story takes place during the 1940s when World War II was becoming more and more a part of daily life at Devon. The war encroaches and finally dominates the lives of the boys at Devon. Starting with the boys shoveling snow off of the train tracks, then their friend, Leper, enlists, and finally troops get permanently stationed at Devon.

In John Knowles’s novel A Separate Peace Identity is shown as what defines us and makes us be placed in other peoples perspectives. An author can use identity to place characters in the readers mind to portray them a certain way, just as John Knowles did in A Separate peace. An identity can be defined as who a person is inside and out.
