Replacing classic novels with more contemporary ones will be beneficial in English Class because of the usage of language. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses an abundant amount of swearing, mostly by the characters. Out of twenty reviews on commonsensemedia.org, a review site where teens get to put in input about various books, eighteen of them warned future readers of there being too much profanity. It was just the culture back then but is it really what we want to be teaching in schools, that characters that make great decisions can also swear up a storm? Newer books are able to filter out much of this foul language with the use of many different editorial processes and critical responses. Also, many classic novels can use a vocabulary …show more content…
When reading a classic novel, a reader in today’s society often doesn’t understand the thoughts and actions of a character right away. One classic example of this in Of Mice and Men is how the men at the ranch play horseshoes in their free time. Most people today don’t realize how back in the Great Depression, this activity isn’t as much of a novelty as it is today. Most teenagers have only played horseshoes a few times in their lives so that drives a wedge between the relatability between them and the characters at that particular moment. Also, teenagers are enjoying to read more contemporary novels more than the classics. The last thing that a student wants to hear in English class in today’s society that the next unit is going to be based upon a Shakespeare novel. This new task requires the reader to comprehend very confusing language and keep in mind a whole new context for the setting of the plot. With all of this going on inside of their heads, it is really hard to squeeze any sort of enjoyment into reading this story. This isn’t the case with more contemporary novels, though. In Duaa Eldeib’s article on this debate, English teacher David Knudson said that after introducing more contemporary stories into English curriculum that “all of a sudden, one of [his] biggest problems is trying to figure out what to do with kids who are 100 ages ahead or have finished the book a week after [they] started it.” This just shows that with contemporary novels, teens are able to enjoy the story more and are now more likely to draw something from it, both plot events and thematic
No matter how good we act or how humane we are, due to our lack of personality and abilities, we can never achieve what we deserve. As individuals, many people do good deeds towards others every day, but nobody earns what they deserve. Everyone is a good person at heart and deserves a better life than what they have now, but due to our limitations we can’t always achieve them, similarly to Lennie and George’s situation as they struggled in the limited world in gaining money for a piece of land as “all men dream of”, “We gotta get a big stake together. I know a little place we can get cheap, but they ain’t givin’ it away” (56). In addition, no matter how good someone is or how hard they work, they will never achieve their dreams because dreams
Chapter 1 1.The first paragraph functions in a very simple way. He uses this simple beginning to set up a simplicity with nature with the simple nature of the two main characters in the book. This allows us to get used to the book and ease us into it. 2.Georgie is a small, quick man with a very dark and suspicious eye while Lennie is quite the opposite;a naive, unintelligent, big man. Steinbeck wants us to infer that since these two characters are quite the opposite they may have a lot of conflict, however they may form a friendship as well.
Additionally, the author's use of imagery is prevalent
All books that young adults read have power. Their power results in their ability to sway and to change the reader in so many ways, not the least of these is morally. These books can create a moral sense in the young by demonstrating what is morally right and what is morally wrong. They can raise and resolve ethical issues. The reader may not agree with each resolution, but is certainly forced to think about issues he or she may never have thought about before (Smith 63).
The classic Of Mice and Men is brought to life with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. This was an exceedingly exciting and intriguing film. The hook to Of Mice and Men was sort of confusing. At first it showed a man (George) on a train staring at a wall. Then it showed two men (Lennie and George) running to someplace particularly fast.
John Steinbeck’s “Of MIce and Men” takes place in Salinas, California and the story seems to tell about two men in a partnership who share a dream of having their own land. George is small and his features are sharp but Lennie is big and has a mental problem so he doesn’t think as straight and forgets things often. At the end of the story George Pulls out a gun and shoots him in the head because Lennie had caused another problem by killing Curley’s wife. I think this was the right thing to do because they could not keep running anymore, Lennie had already caused too many problems in the past, and because George knew that they could not do anything about him anymore. Back before George and Lennie had arrived at this ranch, Lennie had made
In the poem, the speaker has accidentally turned up a mouse's nest. he pauses for a little rumination about how men and animals might seem different, but in the end they're all mortal. no matter how different "thinking men" and "unthinking animals" seem, everybody suffers and dies in the end But there is one difference. mice and men might both die, but only the men are aware of it. In the last verse of the poem, Burns' speaker says that the mouse is "blest" .It seems like Steinbeck is thinking of Lennie as the mouse, and George as the man who turns up its nest: life messes them both up, but at least Lennie doesn't have to remember any of it.
For this assignment, I read the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The story has a very fascinating plot which is supported by the unique usage of grammar. The main characters, George Milton and Lennie Smalls, are a pair of friends who traveled together to basically escape from the consequences at their previous job because of a situation that was mishandled caused by Lennie Smalls. They left to work at a different ranch up north, and this is where major mistakes were made. The book was more enjoyable than expected because of the characters, but also the slang that was used was provocative.
In the play Of Mice and Men Lennie and George were the main characters. Lennie is mentally handicapped, and George was taking care of him. George and Lennie are people trying to find a job. They are best friends, and though George says he wanted to be alone, he would never want to live without Lennie. The costumes in the play really showed what time period the people were in, and I thought that they were made very well.
In the Novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck the title of the book comes from a poem by the 18th century Scottish poet named Robert Burns, He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. His poem is about a mouse which carefully builds a winter nest in a wheat field, only for it to be destroyed by a tractor. The point is that no matter how carefully a project is planned, something may still go wrong with it. This relates to the to the book because Lennie and George are two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move from place to place in California in search of new job opportunities during the Great Depression in the United States, They have the idea of having their own ranch and farm . He dreams
An acceptable writer leaves no room for conclusions to be drawn or pondered in his or her creations. Thankfully, instead, there are works of art sculpted by superb authors, much like John Steinbeck. This literary genius allows his readers to fashion their own opinions about his irresistibly compelling characters in his thought-provoking novel, Of Mice and Men. For instance, the mentally challenged character, Lennie Small, is accompanied by his fatherly figure, George Milton. Granted, some only view George as often being combative and peevish towards Lennie.
There are unique characters throughout the book Of Mice and Men. John Steinbeck shows us some different characters and how they are treated on the ranch. Many of them fit and feel like they belong on the ranch, but there was a few that didn’t; Curley’s Wife, Crooks, and Candy’s dog. They were all treated unfair and didn’t fit with the others on the ranch. I think the most important is Crooks, and how he was lonely, treated unfairly, and nobody wants him around.
Although music could still be made, something is missing. Like a string is to a guitar, so to is tone to Great American Literature. Conceptually, Great American Literature, forged by authors from William Shakespeare to screenplay writer Eric Roth have used profound symbolism to represent hapless events in life, which when combined with themes like loss of innocence and rebellion and protest allow readers
Oftentimes big vocabulary and no humor in stories can make it difficult for readers to engage and understand a story. The stories “Life on the Mississippi,” “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” and “A White Heron,” written in the late 1800s, make it easier for an audience to read their stories by using colloquial language, symbolism, and figurative language. Mark Twain and Sarah Orne Jewett as well as other American authors, entertain their readers by using colloquial language, symbolism, and figurative language. Colloquial language, symbolism, and figurative language often relieve readers of having to worry about not understanding a story due to complex structure or vocabulary that is difficult to understand.
Julia Goldberg Mr. Aubry Response Paper #1 11/11/14 In the book Mice of Men, Curly has a very high level of power, because he is the son of George and Lennie’s boss giving him higher power then the two. Also, Curly has the intimidation of coming off as tough because he used to be a lightweight fighter but, still likes to pick fights. In the beginning of Mice and Men, we are introduced to Curly.
