7 Commandments In Animal Farm

In Animal Farm by Geroge Orwell the pig named Napoleon, ushers himself into power by manipulating all the other animals on the farm, to exile their current leader snowball. After obtaining power, both characters blatantly abuse their power. Napoleon orders his army to slaughter a group of pigs after they confess to being “Traitors” his army of dogs promptly, “tore their throats out” (27). Napoleon actions directly contradict the rules for the society that were established in the beginning. After the society is created, the animals decide that “No animal shall kill any other animal” (Orwell 70).

Animal Farm is a book written by George Orwell about animals who overthrew the farm owner to become an animal run farm. The farm is managed by pigs with a pig named Napoleon as the leader. Napoleon is a strict and deceiving pig who at first made the animals trust him and think he was a good leader only to turn out just like the humans were before the rebellion. So, what reasons allow Napoleon to stay in power. In Animal Farm by George Orwell, Napoleon stays in charge by outsmarting the animals, threatening them that Jones, the original farm owner, would come back, and finally by scaring the animals with trained attack dogs.

A necessity to ensure an ideal and functional community, as demonstrated in George Orwell 's 1945 novel Animal Farm, is the ability to detect and prevent corrupt conduct, read, and the will to challenge authority, which the animals do not possess, therefore putting them at major fault. One of the main factors that leads to the downfall of the farm and Animalism itself is the blatant stupidity that the animals, excluding the pigs, possess. They are overly dense to the point where the concept of corruption is near unfathomable, and thus cannot detect it or act upon their suspicions. Their willingness to believe Squealer 's persuasive speeches whenever doubt arises indicate that the animals are unable to think for themselves. “The other animals understood how to vote, but could never think of any resolutions of their own” (Orwell 19).

For example, the pigs thought they were more important or inferior to the other animals. At the beginning of the book, the pigs were decided to be the leaders because of their intelligence and their ability to read and write. In Animal Farm, George Orwell warns how power will often lead to corruption. Napoleon was placed in a position of power after Major died, and he slowly starts to lavish in his power and become addicted to the lush life of a dictator. When Napoleon first becomes a leader, he expresses how everyone will work equally, but as his reign goes on, he shortens the work hours. At the very end of the novel, the observing animals even start to see that pig and man had become the same. The irony present in the above example, illuminates how regardless of how much a ruler promises to maintain equality and fairness, the position of power that they hold, will corrupt them.

But, not only that he allows another pig, Squealer, to do his dirty work. And also uses dogs to chase his enemy, Snowball, away . In which leads to other animals not knowing that the farm is being ran the same way as when under Mr. Jones, the old farmer 's, control.

Furthermore, Napoleon gives the other animals the impression he was the sole leader of the rebellion on Animal farm and makes Snowball -a leader who wanted what was best for the animals- seem like an enemy who was in cahoots with Farmer Jones since long before the animals took over the farm. Napoleon and Squealer (another “fat cat” pig.) always put the blame on Snowball whenever something went wrong in the farm to avoid having the blame fall on them. Napoleon is an exemplary example of just how selfish and hypocritical people can be in furthering their own aims because he continued to subtly but purposely change the seven rules put in place as the pillars of animalism. For example, Napoleon and the other pigs move into Farmer Jones’s house and sleep in his bed after commanding “No animal shall sleep in a bed”, so he changes the commandment to read “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”.

In a essence Napoleon the pig becomes the persona of “Someone to believe in,” for the animals. After Snowball was chased out, Napoleon most importantly and the pigs become the guidance for the animals lives. “Napoleon is always right”(Orwell 70), said by Boxer the horse, expresses his strong belief in his intelligence and guidance. The more and more, the story progresses, the more religion takes the role of keeping the animals organized and in harmony of the pig’s leadership and system. Although, “The Seven Commandments” start to change, the animals chose to keep following them.

1) The Seven Commandments was propaganda for animalism, which was based on equality and not being humanlike in any way. First, No animal shall wear clothes. This is because by the time the pigs adopt clothes they are so powerful, and the other animals are so fearful, that it is unnecessary; second, whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. Because once they have achieved victory, animals must not emulate Man.

In the satiric novel entitled Animal Farm by George Orwell the character Napoleon represents a group of corrupted leaders who gradually lose sight of what they were working for. The group of pigs, including Napoleon himself, rebelled and fought for freedom against Farmer Jones. However, the utopia that they fought for was forgotten, and the pigs manipulate the other animals. As a result, Animal Farm ends up exactly where it had originally started. Napoleon is deceitful, corrupt, and cunning, and if Napoleon and the other pigs had never appointed themselves the ultimate leaders, Animal Farm would have never failed, and would have been much more successful.
