The IPL Begins
Joe Janes, Associate Dean for Academics and Associate Professor, Information School at the University of Washington, will talk about how the IPL began and share insights into what the founders thought it would be, how it has evolved and its significance in the library and information world.
10:45 – 11:45 a.m.
Present State of the IPL
Current Technical Status of the IPL
Erica Ackerman, IPL programmer, will outline the technical backbone of the IPL, including a discussion of hardware and software. Current and proposed IPL projects will be introduced.
Accessibility Project
Michael Elledge, accessibility specialist with the U-M Digital Media Commons, will explain how the IPL makes the entire site accessible and easy to use for blind and physically handicapped patrons.
Book Recommender Project
Karen Jordan, SI development and alumni relations officer, and SI master’s student Mark Joseph, will reveal how a team of students and staff have worked to create an E-community book recommender system inspired by the works of School of Information alumna Nancy Pearl
Biblioteca Pública por Internet (BPI) and Other International Projects
Maurita Holland, executive director of the IPL, will describe what it takes to create a multilingual IPL. The Spanish IPL is a collaborative effort with Tec de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico. The IPL has a current partnership agreement with BPI and is working toward a French prototype and a mock-up in Arabic. A German prototype is also in consideration.
TeenSpace Project
SI almuna Kristen Motz will introduce you to the newly designed TeenSpace. You’ll learn about the goals the IPL staff has for working with the teen demographic.
Collection Development: Policies and Goals
Sue Davidsen, managing director of the IPL, will describe the new collections being implemented and explore strategies for maintaining up-to-date online collections.

Presentation of Research Initiatives Based on the IPL

Online Fundraising Mechanisms: An IPL-based Field Experiment
SI Associate Professor, Yan Chen, will discuss research and findings of work done in conjunction with Arthur W. Burks Collegiate Professor of Information and Computer Science Jeff MacKie-Mason and Doctoral Student Xin Li. The talk will include the broader topic of supporting public goods.

The Future of the IPL: Idea Market
Attendees will be asked to consider the future of the IPL? Should the IPL exist in 10 years? What should the IPL of the future look like? How should it work? How should IPL-based work be taught? How can we encourage IPL-based research?

Panel of IPL Alumni
Distinguished alumni of the IPL will talk about how their work with the IPL, has helped to shape their careers or how they approach their professional work.
Panelists include Josie Parker, Director of the Ann Arbor District Library; Schelle Simcox, Librarian for Paul Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP; David Carter, Engineering Librarian at the Art, Architecture & Engineering Library; and Matthew Martin, digital projects librarian at Wayne State University.
