John Rogers was born on the White Earth Reservation in northern Minnesota at the turn of the century and was taken to federal boarding school at Flandereau, South Dakota in order to be assimilated into white society. He fought to preserve his Chippewa heritage by writing his memoirs of Chippewa life and traditions.
