Todd Downing was born at Atoka, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), on March 29, 1902. He graduated from high school in Atoka in 1919, and attended the University of Oklahoma. Hestudied languages and anthropology, and received his bachelor's degree in 1924. In 1928, he received his Master's degree. He taught at the University of Oklahoma and wrote reviews of non-fiction and mystery books for local and college publications. He also lead tours in Mexico and set many of his detective stories there. He published numerous detective novels between 1933 and 1941. Late in his career (1971-1973) Downing wrote a series of Choctaw language lessons while he was professor emeritus at Southeastern State College (now Southeastern Oklahoma State University). He died on on January 9, 1974, in Atoka.
