Leonard R. Bruguier, 1944-2009

Sioux

Leonard Bruguier was born in 1944 in Wagner, South Dakota, and is a descendant of the Yankton chiefs War Eagle and Struck by the Ree. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam from 1963-1970 and received numerous citations and service medals.

Bruguier obtained his Ph.D from the Oklahoma State University in 1989. His primary interest was in North and South America comparative studies of Indians with a particular interest in Plains people and their religion , government , and social institutions. He researched the Pipe Religion and its influence in Indian-White relations. He was also an administrator at the Institute of American Indian Studies, University of South Dakota, and a member of the Organization of American Historians.

Leonard moved to Cholula, Mexico. From 2004 to 2008 he was an adjunct professor at the Universidad de las Am�ricas, Puebla, giving classes for the departments of International Relations, Anthropology, and the Interactive Center for Languages and Culture. He was also committed to social service. During his time in Mexico he taught English at a local community center, and was one of the founding members of an NGO, Dejando Huella (Leaving a mark). In early 2009 he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He died in Angeles Hospital in Puebla in the presence of his wife.
