Ralph Salisbury was born in Arlington, Iowa. He is of Cherokee and Irish background, and is a poet, storyteller, translator and editor. Salisbury received his M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in 1951. He travelled as a Fulbright Scholar to Norway, studying the cultural and oral traditions of Sami people, and has been a lecturer in Germany. His career includes professor in the English Department at theUniversity of Oregon from 1951-1994.
