Anarchist Images: Posters from the Labadie Collection

anarchist posters: about this exhibit

This exhibit was created in 1996 as an independent class project for ILS726 to be displayed in the Internet Public Library’s Exhibit Hall. All of the works displayed are owned by the Labadie Collection which resides in the Special Collections Library at the University of Michigan.

The materials were scanned in the Fall of 1995 as part of a digital image database course taught at the School of Information by Professor Howard Besser. The students responsible for the digital imaging and processing are Yu-Ling Fan and Barbara Perles. All posters were scanned at 150 dots per inch and 24 bit depth on an HP ScanJet IIc. Many of the images were adjusted in brightness and contrast for improved readability. The thumbnails are GIF and measure 188 pixels in height. They were saved as 8-bit color with an adaptive palette. The JPEG images were modified from TIFF files and saved as high compression with low image quality. The original JPEG’s used for the image database project were reduced for use in this exhibit to decrease the file sizes and display dimensions. All the image processing was accomplished in Adobe Photoshop 2.5, using a Power Macintosh 6100/66.

All text was written specifically for this exhibit using publications and primary source matierial in the collection of the Labadie and the University of Michigan Library. Anarchist resources available on the World Wide Web were also utilized in developing this exhibit. The pages were coded by hand using HTML 2.0 and conform to the Internet Public Library ’s design dicta.
