The United States went to war against Great Britain in 1812. The reason why is there was a war going on with France and Great Britain in 1803 and the United States was trying to trade with France and Great Britain. But Great Britain would capture the U.S. trade ships if they were trying to trade to with France and France would do the same thing if the U.S. was trying to trade with Great Britain. When the U.S. was trying to trade with France, Great Britain would capture U.S. trade ships and force the men on the U.S. boats to join the British navy. The United States was upset about what was happening to their people and wanted freedom of the seas and the French agreed but the British thought differently.

With Britain giving weapons to Native Americans a few years back and their continuation of impressing sailors, the American people demanded war. Eventually, the government gave in and declared war during the summer of 1812 which was pretty unfortunate for Britain as they were still fighting their war with France. During the early days of wars, America was severely underprepared due to the major cuts to the military and navy during Jefferson's presidency. Despite this, they still won an important battle at the Atlantic Ocean with their warship, the Constitution, which had hulls the British cannonballs could not break. Another fight was won on Lake Erie and they forced the British to retreat into Canada, where they were attacked by the Americans

The war of 1812 was a war that was fought for the rights of Americans. The British were infringing on the rights of Americans and were not obeying the rules set. The war also brought some patriotism to the country, fighting for America came into people’s hearts. The actions the British took towards the Americans were the reasons why this war happened.

Although the war was between France and Great Britain, American was still greatly impacted and their interests were tremendously injured. Of course, the British were purposely sabotaging America's trade and violating American sovereignty. What’s funny is most of the sailors that were captured were in fact, British; this was because citizenship was such a muddle and papers were often forged. Captured sailors would identify themselves by their tattoos of American patriotism like a bald eagle or an American flag.

War of 1812 Final Project The war of 1812 began because America got mad at Britain Because they started to impress american people to join their Royal Navy. It also started because of America’s desire for more territory. America didn’t like the fact the the British was coming over to America and just taking American people and forcing them to be in their Royal Navy. American troops tried to defend themselves in New York, Baltimore and New Orleans, and they were successful in doing so and it boosted National confidence and it fostered a new Spirit of Patriotism.

During the War of 1812 there were two naval battles that were important to the outcome of the war. Both battles took place in freshwater far away from the ocean and the more well known single ship duels between the United States frigates and the British ships, and both had a lasting impact on the war. The first was the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813 under the command of Oliver Hazard Perry five schooners, three brigs and a sloop captured and defeated two ships, two schooners, a brig and a sloop of the Royal Navy at Put-in-Bay in Lake Erie off the coast of Ohio. The Battle lasted for hours and Perry’s flagship Lawrence was demolished causing him to transfer to the Niagara.

James Madison declared this war on the British because of acts that the Americans didn’t think was fair, just like the first revolution. Prior to the war of 1812, the British were keeping forts on America's side of the Great Lakes which was disobeying the territorial laws put in place. They were also supplying American Indians with weaponry which threatened the Americans. However, the largest issue was that Britain kept on taking American ships at sea and interfering with Americans foreign affairs with Europe. The first reason was, The British decided to limit American trade with other countries. The Americans wanted to expand their territory. And finally, The British Naval captains impressed anywhere between six thousand to fifteen thousand sailors. This war had many reasons for happening when it did. There were many important reasons leading up to the war.
