Persuasive Speech: Why You Should Go To College

Every single individual has once heard the words “perform marvelous in school, go to a prestigious college and graduate, in order to get a superior job and succeed in life.” However, no one can really assure that a student with a degree is going to have an exceptional better future than those who do not attend college. Lawrence B. Schlack, a retired superintendent, asserts in his article “Not Going to College is a Viable Option” that to this day colleges are packed with young individuals who are either determined in their career objectives or dubious in what they aspire to do in life. Researchers have a variety of opinions on whether college is worth paying the tuition. Those who don't receive college degrees may have the chance to pursue personal achievements that may not have been available at college because of their own personal lifestyles. Although, those who do receive college degrees have more opportunities and beneficiaries in life than those who don't. In the long term, people who seek to attend college and earn a degree are more likely to be successful and life, and are presented with more job opportunities compared to those who don't attend

Many people feel it is beneficial to invest money on a college education. In most cases, earning more money depends on the field one chooses to enter after graduating from college. Most employers today want to see an applicant have some sort of higher education when applying for jobs as this has changed from the past. As there are many paths one can take to be successful a college education is the most traditional idea of how to live the “American Dream”. Dreams of attending college, getting married, and starting a family are the typical persons aspirations.

In the article, Not Going to College is a Viable Option, the author, Lawrence B. Schlack, argues that college is not the only option for seniors after high school and there may be better options for them. The author supports his argument and persuades his audience effectively by using ethos, pathos, and logos, helping the reader open their eyes and understand why deferring college can be a good option. The author establishes credibility with his audience on two occasions. In the beginning of the article, he exclaims, “Any retired superintendent...better explain himself” which helps him introduce himself to his audience.

In his article “3 Reasons College Still Matters” author Andrew Delbanco attempts to convince his audience the reasons college is still important in order to obtain a high education, in this case three main reasons. He discusses many other’s points of view on college and why people think college is irrelevant to ones future career. People largely had similar reasons to why college is not important; the people who do not attend college mostly say that college is a waste of valuable time and or resources. Delbanco does indeed address these assumptions to why people think college is not important. His argument is aimed towards an audience of people that may consist of those like high school graduates looking to further their education in college

The authors of the book Decision Making for Student Success express that, “A college degree has become strongly associated with having a successful life, due largely to higher earnings and the ability of a college degree to open doors to a variety of occupations and careers” (Baum 114). This means that people with a college degree are more likely to have a successful life because they are presented with more job opportunities that earn higher incomes. In “Where College Fails Us,” the author, Caroline Bird questions whether or not college is the best option after graduating from high school. Bird supports her writing with evidence by exploring multiple career fields, the expenses of college, and the quality of education depending on the student.

School Wide Writing Project Former superintendent, Lawrence B. Shlack argues in his article, Not Going to College is a Viable Option, that too many students believe that going to college is the only option after high school in order to be successful. The main purpose of this article is to convince students to be less narrow-minded on the topic of post-high school decisions and effectively provides the reasoning behind his logic and provides alternatives. As a retired superintendent, Schlack proves that he has sufficient credibility and knowledge of high school students and what most of them are thinking. The use of pathos and ethos combined with his credibility appeals to the readers strongly by making the article relatable for most high schoolers.

Throughout the essay, Charles Murray stresses the idea that college is the wonderland of finding oneself and to find the career that one would want to follow for the rest of their lives. “College is seen as the open sesame to a good job and a desirable way for adolescents to transition to adulthood. Neither reason is as persuasive as it first appears.” Murray, C (2008) Practically spoken, this is not normally the case. College is a fair amount of work, much more work than one would normally acquire through any course of a high school or secondary school setting.

In the article Why Go to College at all? Ojalvo states her reasons on why going to college has benefits, but also states how Dale J. Stevens disagrees. Others may say that college is the only choice. In college, you are in a very structured environment. It teaches students to be organized, follow directions, and memorize facts.

Every year thousands of high school students will receive their diplomas and become graduates. For many of us this is a major moment in young adulthood. One of the first major decisions many of us will make following that day will be whether or not to attend college. All through school it is constantly pushed upon us that college is the best way to prepare for a successful future. However, everyone does not feel that way.

“Is College the best option why or why not discusses the controversial issue of whether college is important or not. On one hand, while some argue that college is very important. Stephanie Owens and Isabel Sawhill writers of article “Should Everyone Go to College” asserts that we may be doing a disservice by telling all young people that college is the best option. Owens feels that college may be of service to some people, but not the best option for everyone.

Now, also I would like to add that college graduates have a higher and better reputation when applying for a job and also helps very well in family relationships as far as being able to afford a home, pay for food,family, etc.

There has been a huge debate over whether or not going to college is worth it since the colonist came from Europe and founded “New College” (later renamed Harvard University) in 1636. While many people feel that college has many advantages and is the obvious choice after graduation, there are some disadvantages to attending as well. The debate continues today with some people arguing that going to college will not only help them expand their minds but will also expand their pockets as well, and others arguing that college is not for them and they can be successful without it. People who contend that going to college is worth it say that college graduates have higher employment rates, bigger salaries, and more work benefits than high school

While reading this textbook They Say, I Say, I preferred the Should Everyone Go to College?. Choosing this essay since it caught my attention. Acquiring an education is compelling it is also a smart investment. Obtaining a bachelor's degree can motivate thou toward becoming prosperous with the right profession. In a recent study, researchers determined that college grads amidst a bachelor's degree earn a higher salary correlated to individuals amidst a high school diploma.

1 Many kids graduate school wondering what college they want to go to and if they want to spend so much money on it. Though some people think that college isn’t worth it I’d like to respectfully disagree. I think that college is worth it. The evidence I have behind my reasoning is that people with a diploma that are not going to college won’t be able to experience amazing social gatherings than people with a degree, and people with a diploma make less money than people with a degree.
