Introduction This essay is based on the comparison of psychosexual theories of Sigmund Freud and psychosocial theory of Erik Erikson. In this essay, similarities and the differences between these two theories are explained and outlined. The two famous theories of development are Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory. Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory are two important theories on human growth and development. This is because, Erikson's theory was based on many Freud's ideas. Both Freud and Erikson emphasise the importance of unconscious mind on personality development. Additionally, these two theories both separate development into stages of a person's life and use similar age divisions for these developmental stages. Though, there are few similarities of Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory, the major differences of the stages and the developmental issues that are explained in both the theories. The reason for this is that each theorist believed in his own experiences and ideas for the development. The main differences are that while Freud’s theory is mainly developed on the psychosexual changes, Erickson’s theory describes the effects of social experiences on an individual during his or her lifespan (Flannagan, 1999). Differences between the stages of Sigmund Freud’s psychosexual theory and Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory. Stage 1: (birth to 1 year) Freud’s Oral Stage takes place from birth to one year. During this stage, a child is orally oriented. The mouth is the child's primary source of satisfaction. Everything a child touches need to put in his or her mouth. Freud believes children do this because it gives them pleasure. However, Erikson’s Trust versus Mistrust is the first stage during a child’s infancy. A child depends completely on caregivers for basic needs such as food, comfort and warmth. If the child is fulfilled with these needs, the child develops trust. Stage 2: (1 to 3 years) Freud called this stage as Anal Stage of development. In this stage, children gain sense of mastery by controlling erogenous zone or in other word it is anal region. Children who are succeeded in this stage are capable and productive. One of the similarities between the two is that the theories are founded based on the exploitation of personal experiences and the personal development of Freud and Maslow. He claims, “The structure of the psyche receives its final form during childhood, specifically at the time of the Oedipus complex” (U. of California). This complex is essential in identifying with either the mother or father, in order to establish sexual orientation (Felluga). During this stage, from ages 4-7, the child finds ways to deal with separation anxiety, and it is also the time that the ego fully matures into the superego: “an internalization of the parental function that eventually manifested itself in your conscience” (Cherry).
