Women’s suffrage began early on, in the mid 1800s, and only came to fruition in 1920. Suffragettes formed groups to fight for their rights, and the passage of the nineteenth amendments demonstrate the success of these groups, including the National Woman’s Party and the National American Woman Suffrage Association on politics. Progressivism was at it roots, a group movement, and the passage of this amendment signifies the inherent triumph of Progressivism. Goals of the Progressives were simple when simmered down: “Progressives sought to improve the conditions of life and labor and to create as much social stability as possible” (Link and McCormick 182). The accomplishment of female suffrage improves the female condition of life and betters social stability, as well as extends democracy.

Even before the Progressive Era, women had an issue of not being able to vote so they started this suffrage movement. Many suffragists were accused of being unfeminine, immoral, and some were physically attacked. Rose Schneiderman said, " Women in the laundries stand for 13 and 14 hours in the terrible steam and heat with their hands in hot starch. Surely these women won’t lose any more of their beauty and charm by putting a ballot in the ballot box(Document 7). " This quote represents Women were disappointed when the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments didn’t gave women the right to vote instead it only gave voting rights to the African Americans.

During the suffrage movement after 1890, women activists from various backgrounds, started to tackling with various social problems dealing with industrialization and other important topics during that time era. Women wanted to focus on topics that appealed to them as women, and mothers. The campaign to get women’s suffrage took over twenty years to get women the right to vote just like the men around them. In these two decades, women had over 480 campaigns in legislatures, over 200 campaigns in state party conventions and almost 20 campaigns in congress before the women got the same right as men. Women's work in the abolitionist movement played a particularly important role in the creation of an organized women's rights movement.

After women gained their independence and right to vote, they were more confident and not afraid of other people’s opinions (Price par. 7). Even though women had gained the right to vote, the discrimination against them did not end (Perry par. 6). Women joined activist groups such as the National American Women Suffrage Association and the Congressional Union, where they protested with different tactics to get what they wanted (Dumenil p. 22).

The mid to early 1800s marked a dynamic period in America’s history. Powerful movements such as the Market revolution the Second Great Awakening gave way to new moral and socio-economic beliefs. These new found beliefs fueled a series of reform movement and earned this era the name the Age of Reforms. Although movements such as temperance restricted democracy in the US, to a greater extent, reform movements such as public education, women’s rights, and abolition expanded democracy by giving power and basic rights to women, slaves, and the lower class.

The women suffragists created organizations and led marches to gain support for women 's rights. But the fight was not over and their lives were not perfect after the movement. Women tried to stick up for themselves earlier, but nobody listened. Women could not vote, could not get the jobs or the education they wanted, and they could not earn respect from men. As Martha E. Kendall wrote,“not all women married for love” (24).

This movement fought for the right for women to vote because women were denied the democratic rights that were given to men and were forced to focus on the cult of domesticity. The movement started in the late eighteenth century however it was renewed during the Second Great Awakening when reform movements started gaining popularity. The suffrage movement was aided by the abolition movement because slavery gave women a reason to unite for a separate cause. This was a new reform movement, unlike women’s suffrage and abolition, which both had roots that were as deep as those of the country’s, and was unique because of the unusually undemocratic responses that society and its people reacted with. Unlike abolition and women’s suffrage, the asylum and penitentiary reform movement did not gather popularity

This movement not only involved with white suffragists, but also with the black suffragists; the whole event was concentrating on sex and racial equality. "As Stanton consistently put it, the republican lesson of the war was that popular sovereignty, the equal political rights of all individuals, preceded and underlay government and nations.... The belief that the right to vote was the individual 's natural right made the case for woman suffrage much stronger." (Dubois, 91) Stanton believed that through the lesion of equal political rights and individual’s natural right made the woman suffrage even stronger.

The Women’s Suffrage Movement I. Before the Women’s Suffrage Movement started, women didn’t have many rights. African-American women and slaves had less rights. They didn’t have legal protection; some didn’t even get the right to raise their own child. Other women had more rights, but not as many as men. They weren’t able to go to college, they had to work at home, weren’t allowed to have strong public opinions, some were sold or even forced into marriage so their family could get more money.

Suffragettes, wanting the rights of woman to be recognized, recognized the rights that were being given to former slaves and made the case that it was now their time to receive their rights. Several suffragettes such as Susan B. Anthony fought hard to convince the American government to grant woman the right to vote. Anthony presented that "as then, the slaves who got their freedom must take it...through unjust forms of law, precisely so, now, must woman, to get their right to a voice in this government" (document 4). Suffragettes often compared themselves to slaves in relation to the rights that had been stripped from both groups of people. During this time in society, women were viewed as incapable of fending for themselves and that they could not make their own, beneficial life decisions. After the passing of her husband, Pankhurst was left with four children, three daughters and a son, and would be responsible for raising and educating them. Whenever Pankhurst would write her poor law guardian to ask for money for basic necessities to raise her children and to pay her daughter’s way through school, she would be denied any money because the guardian felt as if putting the money towards the daughters education was a waste of money and resources. She thought that it was wrong that only married women had suffrage rights, that men and women did not receive equal pay, or that it was only right men and

Women’s suffrage Have you ever thought about women 's rights and equality? It’s not as pretty or memorable as you think it is. But just like Shirley Chisholm said “at present, our country need’s womens idealism and determination, perhaps more in politics than anywhere else.” Which is true but back then it certainly wasn’t. Let me take you way back to when women and men were not equal, and when men had more power over women.

It was an enormous social change for women to take part in public decision making, and gave them a voice to abolish unjust laws. The suffragettes in Australia argued that they were intelligent enough to vote, that it was unfair for them to be taxed without representation, and that they were equal to men therefore should have equal rights. In contrary, the suffragettes’ opponents alleged that women already had indirect power through manipulating their husbands and father’s voting choices at the ballot box, that women were equal but different and that women could not fulfil the duties of citizenship therefore should not vote. The suffragettes encouraged people to sign their petition, as well as held meeting and debates in order to gain supporters. Women in Australia used civil methods of protest, and didn’t adapt the more radical methods used by suffragettes in other countries.

Emmeline Pankhurst was a British political activist and a leader of the British suffrage movement; a movement that helped women win the right to vote. Since 1848 women wanted to recognize their own rights and started the Women 's Rights Movement. The movement was protesting against the fact that women were not afforded the same rights as men. Since women were excluded from the political government, they pressured the government to grant them political rights. As part of the movement, in 1913, Pankhurst carried her appeal to the United States, where she delivered her famous speech Why Are We Militant.

Thank you, Millicent Fawcett, for giving me the opportunity to speak on behalf of the National Union of Women 's Suffrage Societies which Millicent leads with grace and dignity. Some of you may know me and some of you may not, but I am Clementine Forest one of 3000 women suffragists who has marched here today, the largest march ever occurred, for the cause of women 's suffrage. I am here to represent and express the importance of women receiving the right to vote. Unfortunately, the London weather wasn 't on our side with the presence of heavy rain throughout our march from Hyde Park to Exter Hall, but this reinforces that nothing will stop women from protesting their right to vote. As you know we have been gathered together as one, today on February 9th, 1907, the day in which Parliament is open once again for the coming year.
