Why Marijuana Should be Legal Marijuana is a very prominent issue in society today. Many false and slanderous things have been said about marijuana in recent times. But the truth about marijuana continues to reveal itself. Sadly these truths are being criticised because of the stereotypical view that many people call the typical “pot smoker”. This false perception of a lazy and unmotivated America is the result of over seventy years of propaganda and misinformation. In my opinion for many reasons, the Federal Government should legalize marijuana in all 50 states. First of all marijuana has proven to be very useful in the medical field. Many evidence based studies have shown that medical marijuana can help patients who suffer from illnesses such as AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and many other serious terminal illnesses. The effects of marijuana have been known to greatly relieve pain that is caused by these diseases. Also many patients have reported that the usual prescribed pain medications given to them by their doctors do little to almost nothing to help take away their pain. So for many people, marijuana is one of the only things able to give them relief from the pain caused by their illnesses, and the fact that this drug is so far out of reach to suffering patients is wrong. One of the biggest advantages of medical marijuana is that it is all natural, and all the chemicals in it are naturally produced by growing the plant and extracting the chemicals from …show more content…
However from the information that I have gathered from many different articles and news pages, the legalization of marijuana would not only be majorly beneficial to the medical field but it would be an excellent boost for our economy by better spending our money on things that matter. Like repairing our schools, and
How amazing it is that Marijuana can make difference in a great area in our brain. In addition, the physical addiction, which means the physiological response after cut off the drugs supplies. It always appears in movies or TV shows, and it is also real in our life. However, the physical addiction of Marijuana is way lower than any other drugs. So that is one of the reasons why many people hold the idea that the government should not forbid Marijuana at
Millions of people around the world are consumers of marijuana. The demand for legalizing marijuana has grown throughout the years. Users of marijuana pledge for it to be legalized to avoid the prison life. For now, marijuana is an illegal drug in almost all countries. With the demand of it increasing, the legalization of marijuana has grown to be a very controversial topic recently.
Lately, the topic of marijuana legalization in the United States has been tremendously debated by government officials and marijuana users throughout the country. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 banned the use and sale of marijuana in the United States (ElSohly). Marijuana should continue to be illegal because of its toxic smoke, use as a gateway drug, and damaging effects on the developing brains of our youth. I personally believe marijuana should remain illegal in the United States for the benefit of our children, our society and our nation. Some people in this country honestly think that marijuana can be beneficial and base their reasoning on the recent legalization of marijuana in Colorado.
Imagine having an incurable disease and no way to cope with the pain, well this is the case for many Americans and their problems can be solved with marijuana. Now that marijuana is legal in Colorado it has decreased the amount of opioid related deaths. Medical marijuana has many great attributes such as its ability to safely and effectively help people with symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, and epilepsy. There are many non smoked ways to consume marijuana, such as in cooking oils, butter, foods, and from vaporizers. If the marijuana is regulated by the FDA it will be safer because there is no chance of it being laced with anything.
There are thirty million Americans that have smoked marijuana in the past year. Sixty eight percent of Americans live in states that are working are trying to reform their laws (2016 Marijuana Policy Reform Legislation). Legalizing marijuana is becoming the number one phenome in America. There are multiple reasons on why it should be legalized but with all the pros comes the cons. By legalizing marijuana America can provide more jobs, and lower the crime rate tremendously.
For many years research has been done, testing the use of medical marijuana and seeing if it really helps and is really worth it. So far 14 states, including New Mexico have legalized marijuana for medical use. The reason marijuana is still illegal in many states is because even though state laws allow it for medical use, federal law still classifies it as a “schedule I drug” (Hoffman & Weber, 2010). Also there has been no medical use accepted by the FDA.
More positive results can aspire from its legalization and restricting it raises many challenges. From a business standpoint, it is not cost effective to keep it illegal and legalizing marijuana can bring revenue for the government. The amount of money the U.S. spends on criminalizing marijuana users can be used to target the real criminals. Marijuana is not like the other drugs and its use for recreational purposes should be allowed. Marijuana continues to offer us remedies for many ailments and it should not be treated as a drug, rather a medicine or for the pursuit of happiness.
Furthermore drug laws within the United States for marijuana are leaving many people being issued harsh jail sentences, due to marijuana charges against them. Even though some states, such as North Carolina decriminalize marijuana, numerous amounts of states are treating their citizens with cruel and usual punishments just by having a small possession on them at a given time. During the years of 2001 and 2010 8.2 million people were arrested due to marijuana type drug charges, and out of that group of 88% were based on just having a little bit of marijuana on them at the time. By legalizing cannabis in the United States it would free the already overcrowded prisons in the country, due to the harsh minimum sentence laws placed on them. An instance of these harsh minimum sentence laws is with the case of Joe Pinson, who was sentence to a mandatory 5-year sentence in jail because he cultivated and possessed marijuana, “Joe Pinson, convicted in 1993 of marijuana cultivation and possession - his first offense - and sentenced to a mandatory five-year jail term, despite the fact that he grew the marijuana because it helped treat his debilitating asthma symptoms” (Goddard).
If marijuana is regulated and taxed properly, it can generate millions of dollars that can help pay the debt of the US and/or help cities rebuild a better infrastructure. Marijuana has become the third most popular drug in the US behind alcohol and tobacco. It is a renewable resource and is not just used for smoking; it can be used to make paper, oils, and cloth. Every year millions of tax dollars are being spent to enforce marijuana laws. If these laws were repealed and marijuana was legalized, we would not only make money from the marijuana, but we would also be using a lot less money to enforce marijuana laws.
Marijuana should remain illegal in the United States, and states that have passed laws to make it legal should reverse those laws. Marijuana is addictive and a gateway drug. Legalizing marijuana will make it generally more available to the public, which will also make it more likely to be used by young adults and children that are not old enough to make smart decisions regarding drug
The current war on drugs is clearly failing- costing us too many lives and too much money. There are many benefits to be gained from the cannabis plant: increased tax revenue, safety due to governmental regulation, decreased crime, decreased use of hard drugs, and the environmental benefits of hemp are just a few mentioned above. With all these reasons taken into consideration, the decriminalization/legalization of marijuana seems like a
Starting from the beginning, I will tell you what marijuana - also called grass, ganja, pot, and various other slang terms - is. Marijuana comes from the Indian hemp plant and is the greenish-brown mixture of the dried flowers of cannabis sativa. When I was younger I used to believe that speaking positively about Marijuana, makes you look like a bad personage or either worse, a criminal. This opinion was based on the false information media produced and on the government laws of my country. However, by enhancing my knowledge, I have decided that cannabis offers so much to humanity, that not only it has many benefits, it has to be legalized.
Today the demands are changing in different states. In States such as Colorado and Washington, marijuana has been legalized for recreational use. This move raised several questions as far as decriminalization of marijuana is concerned. Besides portraying the US in a bad light, legalization of marijuana for recreation increases the risk of developing mental problems, increases government expenditure on public health, jeopardizes the future of children, and is a gateway to other dangerous drugs. Increased health problems and public health expenditure-
The legalization of marijuana has widespread benefits for the medical, law enforcement, and economic sectors. Marijuana has a variety of benefits in the medical field because it can control many side effects from different diseases. For instance, cancer is a deadly disease that kills over seven million people across the world every year. Patients diagnosed with cancer go through several painful treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy. Thankfully, marijuana helps to alleviate pain and suppress nausea from cancer treatments.
It was made illegal in the 1930’s for the same reasons as alcohol, because it was believed that it was going to do harm to society. As years have gone by, it is obvious that a mistake was made. The fact that marijuana was made illegal has created numerous problems for the United States that on the long run could have been easily avoided. Countries in different parts of the world and some states within the United States have already legalized marijuana and they have all shown positive outcomes out of their decisions. Although marijuana is illegal in majority of the states, legalizing marijuana for recreational use would bring about social and economical reforms that would help deter crime in the country, increase the amount of money the government makes, and also help people that are medically in need of the drug.
